A book in serious need of an editor

I wanted to give this book a five star rating, I really did, but the book had some serious problems.

First of all the book was badly in need of a proof-reader. I found a number of typos. Most notably missing commas, question marks at the end of a declarative sentence, periods at the end of an interrogative sentence and periods in the middle of a sentence.

Also there were times when Mr. Curtis would be discussing one subject and then he would suddenly change the topic and abruptly start on a very different topic in the very next sentence. This makes his writing style seem awkward and choppy at times.

Also on page 78 Mr. Curtis tells us of Deacon Smith. Mr. Curtis's grandmother used to tell tales of the great Deacon Smith who was reputed to do miraculous things. No one ever saw the good Deacon Smith. His grandmother never saw him. His grandmother's friends never saw him. Nor did her friend's friends or any casual acquaintances or anybody she ever met in her life know anybody who ever met Deacon Smith, but everybody talked about him and every year there were rumors that this miracle man who could perform faith healings and other miracles would show up at their little church and hold a revival.

After more than eight decades of waiting for Deacon Smith to show up in her little town, Curtis's grandmother wondered out loud if Deacon Smith ever really existed. Nobody had ever met him. There were no photographs of him. There was no physical evidence whatsoever. In all likelihood he was just a folktale and somebody to give the people hope. Somebody for the simple folk to idolize, even if there was no hope that you would ever meet him.

This story is a very graphic example of how large numbers of people can go long periods of time believing in people who don't exist, it helps the reader understand how millions of people could believe in Jesus even if Jesus isn't really real and this story SHOULD HAVE BEEN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BOOK! It makes a perfect introduction to the topic of the non-historicity of Jesus!

Still, there is a wealth of useful information and valuable insights in this book. For instance Mr. Curtis proves beyond a shadow of reasonable doubt that the Jesus Christ written about in the Gospels was NOT a historical figure.

Mr. Curtis proves this with the following pieces of useful information:

1. Despite the many Greek, Roman and Jewish scholars, historians, poets and writers who lived during or shortly after the first century, NONE of them ever wrote about Jesus Christ or Christ's miracles. Roman historians and clerks recorded many trials and punishments meted out during the first century in and around Jerusalem, but there's no record of a Jesus Christ being arrested or crucified during this time period.

Despite the fact that Jewish historians recorded many of the atrocities that King Herod inflicted upon the Jews there is NO historical record of King Herod ordering the slaughter of all the male children less than two years old.

And despite the many records we have from Eastern countries such as India, Persia, Arabia and the Kushan Empire NONE of these countries have any records of three wise men traveling East and following a star so that they can gives gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to a small child. They certainly don't have any records of any wise men claiming that a child was born to a virgin. And there are certainly no records of any wise men coming back from Judea after having met the newborn son of a god!

If the Jesus of the Gospels HAD really been born of a virgin, performed miracles, raised the dead, been executed and rose from the dead, you would think that SOMEBODY would have written something about it during the same century that it happened!

2. There are a number of savior gods such as Attis, Horus, Krishna, Mithra, and Zoroaster that predate Jesus by hundreds (or thousands) of years and all of them were born of a virgin on December the 25th, performed miracles, were executed by the authorities and rose from the dead three days later. Some of the quotes from the Gospels were first spoken by the pagan gods centuries before Jesus.

3. The books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John (the earliest known writings about Jesus) were not written until 70 A.D. at the earliest, and probably not written until a good deal later. Why? If Jesus was such a great teacher, healer, miracle worker and religious leader WHY wait until decades after he's dead before anybody writes down a single word about him? Mr. Curtis also points out the fact that the Gospels were originally written anonymously and that the names Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were credited to the Gospel stories hundreds of years later. Also all of the books were written in Greek, not the everyday language of Jesus and his immediate followers, which would have been Aramaic. And despite the fact that all of Jesus' followers were Jews, the author of the Book of Mark was clearly not Jewish. Whoever the author was he seems to have known little of Jewish life or culture, or of Palestinian geography. He often attributes Roman customs to Jesus and his followers.

After proving that Jesus was not a historical figure, Ian Curtis goes on to discuss the Scopes Monkey trial, creationism, atheism, evolution, the fact that America's founding fathers were NOT Christians and did NOT found America as a Christian nation. He discusses the damage that Christianity has done over the past 2,000 years as well as the damage that's being done by Christianity right now. He touches on just about every religious topic you can think of. He gives you tons of ammunition for arguing with Christians on the internet.

My personal opinion is that in a book titled, "JESUS: Myth or Reality?" should have focused whether Jesus was a historical figure and left other topics for later books, but that's just my opinion. Perhaps other readers will disagree.

This book suffers from common defects found in multi-authored texts: highly variable writing skills and lack of organization. If you know nothing about neurology and are trying to learn, you will not succeed with this book, which was my med school neuro text.

The chapter on The Electrochemical Basis of Nerve Function is dreadful. It has many formulas which produce results inconsistent with tabulated results in figures and even with the examples in the text. Much knowledge about cell potentials is assumed, and important principles like the effect of relative permeabilities on resting potential are stated without any explanation at all.

The chapter on The Chemical Basis for Neuronal Communcation is pretty good if all you want to know is the norepinephrine system. There are many synaptic systems in the nervous system that hardly get any mention, so your knowlege of those systems will be nonexistent after reading this book.

The woefully inept diagrams in the chapter on the Development of the Nervous System give no sense of three-dimensionality at all. The primary authors should look at Persaud's "The Developing Human" for a lesson on how to draw diagrams, or even the black-and-white Gray's anatomy.

The chapters are replete with forward references, forcing the reader to spend more time in the appendix looking up anatomical terms than reading the chapters. The editors made no attempt to enforce organization of material. The dime-thin USMLE review books that cover the same material do a better job at organization than this text.

To its credit, there is some depth not found in smaller texts. For students studying for boards, a better strategy might be to first master one of the review books, then read Haines for greater depth.

Of the condensed neuroscience type books, this is the best one I have seen. It is well-written, contains pertinent information, and has excellent diagrams. As a fellow in Pain Medicine, I have found this book to be a quality, concise reference.

Great Basic Science Textbook

This is a real solid textbook. It was more or less an extension of what you would learn in neuroanatomy in first year of medical school. It is completely overkill in some regards if that is why you are using it, but as a 4th year going into neurology, I found it was an extremely helpful review with excellent images on every page. My neuroanatomy desperately needed a book like this to get the ball rolling, given that neurologists spend a substantial amount of time looking at head imaging. For those interested, this is not a clinical textbook. There is very little information provided on diseases and more or less no information with regards to differential diagnoses and treatment. So if you choose to purchase this book, just understand that this is more like first year medical school than third year clinical rotations. This is a basic science textbook.

About the Author
Terrance Klein holds a doctorate in fundamental theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, writing under Archbishop Rino Fisichella, auxiliary bishop of Rome and President of the newly formed Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization. Klein was an associate professor of theology at Fordham University, 2006-2010, and is now a visiting professor of religious studies at Fairfield University. He is the former chair of the Karl Rahner Society of America and is the author of two scholarly monographs: How Things Are in the World: Metaphysics and Theology in Wittgenstein and Rahner (Marquette University Press, 2003) and Wittgenstein and the Metaphysics of Grace (Oxford, 2007) as well as a popular work in spirituality Vanity Faith: Searching for Spirituality with the Stars (Liturgical Press, 2009).

Not Solutions Manual

We thought this was a solutions guide to the problem sets in the Accounting Principles book but it is NOT. There is no description for the book as I write, and to explain to anyone else looking at this book, this book merely provides you additional problems based on each chapter and the answer for those. No actual problem solutions are given for the textbook itself.

Survey of Facist Italy's Colonial Policy in Libya

The subtitle to this book, "The Italian Reconquest of Libya" is better suited as the title. It is certainly not a biography of Omar al Mukhtar, but it does contain valuable information regarding Italian colonial policy in Libya, and perhaps a glimpse into more recent events. Viewed holistically, parallels are easily drawn between modern colonial and/or military occupations in Israel or Iraq, for example, wherein such occupiers truly believe they are entitled to usurp the lands of sovereign peoples.

The book concludes with a transcript of the trial of Omar al Mukthar as well an in depth analysis of the charges and the motives behind them. Following the execution of the resistance leader, much infighting occurs with in ranks of the Italian brass over who should be recognized as the person responsible for his capture and the impact this had on the Libyans as well as neighboring Arab populations.

A unique survey on a topic that was largely obscured for decades after the fall of Fascist Italy, it is a worthy read for anyone interested in colonialist studies, but a biography of Omar al Mukhtar, it is not.

About the Author
Clay Shirky divides his time between consulting, teaching, and writing on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies. He is the author of two recent books on the subject, "Cognitive Surplus: Creativity and Generosity in a Connected Age" (2010) and "Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations" (2008). He holds a joint appointment at New York University, as an associate arts professor at the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) and as an associate professor in the journalism department. He is also a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society, and he was the Edward R. Murrow Visiting Lecturer at Harvard's Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy in 2010. A graduate of Yale, his writing appears frequently in "The New York Times, Wired, The Wall Street Journal," and "Harvard Business Review," and his TED Talks have been viewed by millions. He lives in New York City.

Fun and informative, but not focused or rigorous

This is more like a New Yorker article than a typical book. The central topic is the rise of Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi, but it is interspersed with accounts of the author's year in Shanghai, a short history of Communist China, descriptions of state surveillance and Internet regulation in China and discussions of East Asian business attitudes toward fashion and technology. The topics are all related to Xiaomi in some fashion, but not in any other respect to each other.

The book is published by Columbia Global Reports which aims, "to combine the immediacy of narrative power of journalism with the intellectual ambition and acuity of scholarship." The book succeeds in one out of four, it harnesses impressive narrative power to communicate a lot of important information in a more or less coherent story. That's much more pleasant to read than dry analysis, and much easier to understand and retain.

It's not as good on immediacy, most of the direct reporting is from 2011 to 2013, and is good story telling to illustrate points in the more serious accounts, but all the important stuff is from the general business press, not direct experience, not primary sources. The lack of primary sources also disqualify it as scholarship, but in any event, it's neither ambitious nor acute. It's a description of the Chinese technology business at a point in time, with a lot of context, but there are no conclusions or insights.

Even if your specific interest is in the history of Xiaomi, there are a number of more focused English-language accounts (such as China's Disruptors). But if you want the wide-angle view, Little Rice does a better job. It's not really an either/or choice, Little Rise is a quick, fun read that provides a brief immersion into some important global trends viewed from Shanghai and Hong Kong (I don't say "viewed from China" as there are other Chinese perspectives).

One minor quibble is the book starts with a map of the world, with China relegated to the right margin, in a projection that makes it look one-fourth the size of Greenland instead of more than four times as big. A book hoping to shift a Western reader's viewpoint in a Sinocentric direction could make a better start with an equal-area projection that puts China in the center.

The Little Phone That Symbolizes Modern China

Unless you’ve lived or worked in China since 2010, you’ve probably never encountered Earth’s third-largest mobile phone company, Xiaomi. The company, whose name translates as “Little Rice” in Chinese, currently dominates China’s mid-range smartphone market. Despite having no market presence in North America or Europe, Xiaomi’s global aspirations have flourished, and in five years, it has progressed from geek-oriented software startup to punching above its weight class.

Clay Shirky, NYU professor and new media cheerleader, sees Xiaomi as emblematic, not of the mobile phone industry, but of China’s changing place in global technology leadership. China has a lengthy reputation as America’s favorite offshore dumping ground; Apple famously labels its products “Designed In California; Assembled In China.” But as Chinese manufacturers become increasingly comfortable with American designs, many have assumed the design role and created native products domestically.

If you’ve experienced the existential dread of realizing you’ve forgotten your phone, you understand how important networked mobile technology has become. This goes double for poor countries. As rising technology puts mobile phones within mass customer reach, villagers in Africa and Asia who cannot afford laptops, cars, or books, nevertheless have global access with affordable phones. Networked mobile access puts poor, distant villagers on (theoretically) equal footing with everyone else.

Shirky quotes technology maven Jan Chipchase that mobile phones have joined money and keys as the three things without which we cannot leave the house. This presents China unprecedented opportunity and unique obstacles. Mainland China remains among Earth’s last nominally Communist nations, though “Communist” now means more party control than economic principle. Mobile phones offer instant global access to information, but also permit instantaneous coordination, anathema to one-party states.

Xiaomi straddles this complicated line. The corporation got its start pitching an open-source Android variant operating system, crowdsourcing critical design elements. This democratic hybrid business model remains central to Xiaomi’s success, even as they’ve transitioned into hardware development. But the corporation must tapdance between the Party’s twin mandates of unprecedented personal liberty, and absolute political autocracy. Xiaomi’s technology must permit everyone to do everything… except challenge the state.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has recently pushed something he calls the Chinese Dream. Unlike Maoist slogans of expunging both ancient and Western influences, Xi’s vision has a distinctive monetary value. Like the American Dream, the Chinese Dream involves home ownership, wealth management, and upward mobility. However, it infuses distinct collectivist tenets into its language. Xi wants Chinese to become wealthy in ways that redound positively upon the state.

China actively restricts domestic access to global Internet sources. Chinese citizens can access Amazon, Gmail, and other international sites through demi-legal network loopholes, and enforcement runs two-tiered for elites versus plebeians. Whatever advances business and globalization, the Party deems good, or anyway tacitly permits; whatever permits citizens to organize, coordinate, or pitch any alternative to the state, the Party squashes. (State speech codes forbid puns, to excise double meanings.)

This creates market narrowing for Chinese firms outside China. Shirky describes how, when Xiaomi first marketed phones in South Asia, Indian media generated panic that Xiaomi was shipping user data into China. Well, all mobile service providers store metadata on native server farms; Apple and Samsung do it. Their servers merely dwell in non-totalitarian states. Xiaomi, by contrast, must simultaneously appease state officials and free-market buyers, a difficult global sell.

For Shirky, Xiaomi isn’t another corporation, despite its massive size (its market is huge enough to dwarf international firms while remaining primarily locked inside China’s borders). Rather, Xiaomi represents China’s strange relationship with modernity. China has become economically free but politically restricted; socially diverse but ethnically homogenous; global yet totalitarian. If it survives ten more years, the People’s Republic will become history’s longest-lived one-party state.

Thus China is already making history, even if that history feels muddled to technocratic Western observers. It’s yoked competing influences together, with apparent success, and seems to be winning the global three-legged race. But China’s aggregate wealth hasn’t translated into individual well-being; the typical Chinese citizen remains poor by world standards. How information firms like Xiaomi fare in coming years will define how China faces today’s global situation.

Shirky’s writing combines journalism with technical expertise to describe powerful conflicting influences which will define global market considerations within our lifetimes. Xiaomi’s rapid advance, from zygote to market dominance inside five years, and its odd, counterintuitive business model, are symbolic, for Shirky, of China’s changing role in global economics. To understand China through analogy, Shirty says, let’s understand Xiaomi. That isn’t easy, but it’s decidedly unnerving.

The only thing small about this little tome is its size

This is a fabulous book about the country that is changing faster than any other in the world.With a population of 1.3 billion it has approximately 4 times the times as many people as the US.It has a GNP that is already approaching that of the US.and is likely to suurpass it soon.However if you divide its GNP by its population,itsGNP per capital is 20% below the world average,putting it on par with Tunisia and the Dominican Republic.South Korea has nearly triple the per capita annual national income,while Japan,the US,and most of northwestern Europe have quadruple.In other words,China is rich,but the Chinese are poor.However that is on average; some are fabously rich,while most are extremely poor.
In the western world we have seen manufacturing move so much to China,that to find anything not made in China,is a rarity today.
This book is centered around the company Xiaomi ( since hardly anyone in the West has ever heard o fit,I'll give you the pronounciation "Show Me".)They are the most important mobile phone manufacturers in the world right now.It is the first Chinese phone manufacturer to compete globally and successfully,not only in price but also in innovation,design and service.
If you want to know what is driving the economy and responsible for the stupendous growth in China in the last couple of decades;you will quickly learn why in this book..In spite of these tremendous advances,the question has to be asked;will it continue.Already,it has surpassed anything that any country has been able to accomplish.
There are many questions,aspects,and whatnot that are to be looked at about China; its economy,its huge masses of people,its politics and where and how it will fit into the community of world countries;but this book will give you a miniscule look at it all.It is well written and unbelievably informative in only 134 pages.
