    CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THIS BOOK

The study of human development over the life span reveals the fascinating story of human beings and how they change over time. The story is both universal and uniquely personal, because it speaks to us about ourselves and the people who are important to us in our lives. Besides being intrinsically interesting, knowledge about development has obvious relevance for professionals engaged in counseling, social work, and other helping fields. We believe that in order to understand our clients and the nature of their problems, we must see clients in context. One important context is clients' developmental history. As helping professionals, we must take into account the threads of continuity and change in people's lives that bring them to their present point in development. This text provides the background and the tools to enable professionals to view their clients from a developmental perspective.

This text also reflects the contemporary view that life span development is a process deeply embedded within and inseparable from the context of family, social network, and culture. People do not progress through life in isolation; rather their developmental course influences and is influenced by other people and systems. Some of these influences are related to the cultural differences that exist in a world of increasing diversity. We recognize the importance of these factors in understanding human development and emphasize cultural and systemic influences on human growth and change throughout the book.

Knowledge about development increases every day, making it exceptionally difficult to summarize this dynamic field. Presumably, every author needs to make some choices about what to include in a book of this nature. This particular text is configured to emphasize selected theories and research that have useful applications for helping professionals. The main purpose of this book is to provide students in the helping professions with information that can be translated into professional "best practice" applications.

Throughout this text, we also emphasize the role of clinicians as reflective practitioners. Reflective practice involves "active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusions to which it leads" (Dewey, 1933/1998, p. 9). Our primary vehicle for accomplishing this goal is twofold: (1) encouraging the reader to reflect on personal experience and assumptions about development and (2) communicating the value of research-based knowledge as a means of understanding human development. Our particular orientation intentionally emphasizes the significance of developmental research to the work of the professional helper. We attempt to integrate various lines of developmental research into a useful whole that has practical value for helpers in applied settings. In so doing, this book bears witness to the enormous amount of work done by developmental researchers, particularly in the last several decades. Without their groundbreaking efforts, clinicians' own work to improve people's lives would be greatly impoverished. It has been a challenge and an honor to record their contributions in this book.

    COVERAGE AND ORGANIZATION

The opening chapters establish the theme of the text and introduce broad issues in development. Chapter 1 begins with an examination of the role of developmental knowledge in reflective practice. Students are introduced to theoretical models and issues that appear and reappear throughout the text. They are encouraged to reflect on their own theoretical assumptions about development and on the impact those assumptions could have in clinical practice. Boxed features help students understand how developmental processes are studied scientifically and how scientifically established information can be useful in practice. Chapter 2 takes a close look at the role of genetics in behavioral development, describing basic hereditary mechanisms by which any genetic influences must operate and examining alternative scientific strategies for assessing the contribution of genetics to behavior. Aspects of prenatal development and the multiple influences on aprenatal development are also considered.

The remaining chapters follow a chronological sequence, covering a full range of critical topics in physical, cognitive, and social development. In Chapters 3 through 5, the infancy and preschool periods are the focus. Among the topics covered are early brain development and many aspects of early cognitive growth, such as the development of representational thought and memory, children's early "theory of mind" or naive psychology, the early understanding of symbols and of language, and more. Coverage of early social development includes the emergence of emotions, emotion regulation, attachment processes, early self-development, temperament, and the role of parental disciplinary style in the growth of self-regulation. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 examine important developments in middle childhood and in the transition to adolescence, including the growth of logical thinking, the expanding capacity to process and remember information, perspective-taking skills and friendship development, influences on the developing self-concept, developments in moral thinking, influences on the emergence of prosocial and antisocial behavior, sex-role development, and peer relationships. Adolescence is the subject of Chapters 9 and 10, covering pubertal change, advances in logical and metacognitive skill, identity development, and the influences of peers, parents, school, and culture on adolescent behavior. Chapters 11 and 12 describe the young adult period, or what has been called "emerging adulthood," and includes a close look at the way thinking changes as adulthood looms and at the progress of work and career and of intimate relationships. Chapters 13 and 14 are focused on changes in physical, cognitive, and social functioning during middle and late adulthood, respectively. These chapters examine the many kinds of change that adults experience and the maintenance of well-being in the face of loss. Among the key developmental tasks discussed are marriage and its discontents, the experience of child rearing, the role of wisdom, stereotypes about aging, coping with death and bereavement, and many more.

    FEATURES AND HIGHLIGHTS
    • Depth of coverage: Because the book is designed for graduate students, most topics, especially those that have special relevance to helping professionals, are covered in greater depth than in a typical life span text.
    • Writing style: The writing style is conversational in tone and is aimed at making even complex material accessible. To avoid sexist language use and yet still have the luxury of using the singular pronouns "she" and "he," the feminine pronoun is used in odd-numbered chapters and the masculine pronoun in even-numbered chapters.
    • Culture and gender: In every chapter, cross-cultural and cross-gender issues are discussed wherever relevant developmental research is available.
    • Boxed features: In many chapters, boxes highlight special topics. These may be the biographies of influential theorists or detailed examinations of issues such as infant day care, children's credibility as eyewitnesses, developmental psychopathology, the kinds of decision-making errors that adult clients often make, cross-cultural differences in funeral rituals, and many others.
    • Applications: Application sections in each chapter offer information and suggestions for how helping professionals might apply what they have learned in a clinical setting.
    • Case studies and case study discussion questions: Case studies and questions at the end of each chapter are another set of pedagogical tools for helping students think about the clinical implications of the developmental facts and theories they have learned.
    • Journal questions: Journal questions at the end of each chapter help students reflect on the issues they have read about, encouraging them to consider the relevance of those issues in their own development.
    • Important terms: Throughout the text, new or technical terms are printed in bold italics and defined. At the end of each chapter, a list of these key terms is provided as a study tool.
    • Chapter summaries: Every chapter ends with a summary of the major topics covered in that chapter, providing yet another study tool for students and a planning tool for instructors.
    • Test bank: A test bank for instructors accompanies the text. For each chapter, the test bank includes a chapter outline, a set of learning objectives, and 30 potential test questions, both multiple-choice and essay style. Multiple-choice questions assess comprehension of basic content knowledge and ability to apply knowledge to problem solving.

    Excelente libro!
    By Carola

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY TIME AND THE WASHINGTON POST • LOCUS AWARD WINNER

“The Shattered Seas trilogy has worked its way into a very exclusive group of my favorite fantasy novels of all time.”—James Dashner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maze Runner

“A fast-paced tale of betrayal and revenge that grabbed me from page 1 and refused to let go.”—George R. R. Martin

“I swore an oath to avenge the death of my father. I may be half a man, but I swore a whole oath.”

Prince Yarvi has vowed to regain a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains, and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea. And he must do it all with only one good hand.

The deceived will become the deceiver.

Born a weakling in the eyes of his father, Yarvi is alone in a world where a strong arm and a cold heart rule. He cannot grip a shield or swing an axe, so he must sharpen his mind to a deadly edge.

The betrayed will become the betrayer.

Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast and the lost, he finds they can do more to help him become the man he needs to be than any court of nobles could.

Will the usurped become the usurper?

But even with loyal friends at his side, Yarvi finds that his path may end as it began—in twists, and traps, and tragedy.

    Praise for Half a King

“Tremendously entertaining . . . lightning-fast and filled with a wonderful collection of rogues, villains and two-faced bastards . . . From the first chapter [Joe Abercrombie] wastes no time as the reader is swept up in a gripping tale of betrayal and revenge.”—SciFi Now

“Once this plot has its teeth in you, it will not let go. . . . Abercrombie’s masterful storytelling means that everything, from the characters that you come to love and despise, to the sprawling world that is explored, is enthralling.”—Fantasy Book Review

“Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea is a fantastic yet believable backdrop to Yarvi’s struggle, a vivid imaginary land.”—The Seattle Times

    “Intriguing characters . . . nonstop action.”—Chicago Tribune

“Half a King is my favorite book by Joe Abercrombie so far, and that’s saying something.”—Patrick Rothfuss

“As in all Abercrombie’s books, friends turn out to be enemies, enemies turn out to be friends; the line between good and evil is murky indeed; and nothing goes quite as we expect. With eye-popping plot twists and rollicking good action, Half a King is definitely a full adventure.”—Rick Riordan

    “Enthralling! An up-all-night read.”—Robin Hobb

“Polished and sharp, perhaps his most technically proficient novel yet . . . I dare you to read the first chapter and try not to turn the next page.”—Brent Weeks

“Half a King can be summed up in a single word: masterpiece. It’s a coming-of-age story. It’s a Viking saga. It’s a revenge tale and family drama and the return of the prodigal son. But most of all, it’s this: a short time alongside people as weak and blundering as we are and, in the midst of it all, as heroic. Far too short a time, as it turns out. What a wonderful book.”—Myke Cole

“Half a King is full of all the adventure I’ve come to expect from Abercrombie and a tenderness I never knew he had.”—Sam Sykes

    From Booklist
Yarvi succeeds to the throne of Gettland when his father and elder brother are killed. But Yarvi is a reluctant king. Because of a deformed hand, he has always felt an inadequate son to his father and now an inadequate king. He is engaged to his cousin, but his uncle is not interested in having a weakling for a son-in-law nor “half a king” for the country. The uncle’s coup topples Yarvi from the throne, but Yarvi escapes with his life. Yarvi’s escape leads, however, only to enslavement by people from neighboring Vansterland. Out from this situation emerges a long and arduous quest as Yarvi swears to avenge his father’s and brother’s deaths and dislodge his uncle from the throne. In the process, Yarvi attains a new maturity, the most important component of which is a newfound confidence. Defeat of his uncle does not mean that Yarvi steps up and occupies the throne again. Instead, he wisely effects an alternative scenario. The world building here is complete and convincing, and the characters are arresting in their all-too-human nature. --Brad Hooper

“The Shattered Seas trilogy has worked its way into a very exclusive group of my favorite fantasy novels of all time. The pacing is perfect, the characters deep and true and real, the world rich and authentic, the plot full of twists and turns. Perhaps my favorite part is that no one is purely good or evil: Each and every character has layers upon layers that are a joy to discover. I tore through all three books and truly hope that someday Joe Abercrombie returns to this magnificent, captivating world.”—James Dashner, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Maze Runner

Half an Abercrombie (but still good!)
    By David Andrews
Joe Abercrombie isn’t exactly someone I imagined from the latest wave of gritty/dark fantasy authors who would dive into the young adult genre - yet here we are. Half a King is the first book in the now-complete Shattered Seas trilogy, and stars the young Yarvi, second in line to the throne of Gettland. Yarvi is a young man on the cusp of manhood, about to take the tests to become a minister - sort of like a maester from Game of Thrones - and renounce all claim to the throne of Gettland when, predictably, tragedy strikes.

Abercrombie does an excellent job painting the outlines of a boy in this situation, raised in a cold, royal household, who trusts his mentor more than anyone in the world. He is well-suited to his apparent destiny as a minister, but quite suddenly finds himself thrust onto the throne - him and his shriveled half-hand that renders him an object of scorn among the people of the court.

More misadventure befalls Yarvi as the story finds its footing and, while somewhat predictable, is entertaining until the last twist reveals itself in the final few pages of the book. There is love, of a kind, between Yarvi and a fellow misadventurer; there is betrayal; there are forbidding parents and mysterious companions.

However, Half a King feels, ultimately, like half an Abercrombie book. A lot of the grit has been washed away from the story, grit that made Abercrombie a hit not that long ago with The First Law, and while I would certainly recommend Half a King to young adults rather than that other series, I would still hold that first trilogy as the better. Nonetheless, I look forward to reading Half the World, the next entry in the Shattered Seas trilogy.

Boy-kings and Vikings and Bloodthirsty Oaths!
    By Neil Hepworth
After six excellent books filled with grit and gore, written for adults, Joe Abercrombie decided (as I understand it) to recharge his batteries by writing a fantasy YA trilogy, starting with Half a King. You’d be forgiven if you thought, after reading the first few chapters, that this was going to be a normal, mundane, (if well written) coming of age YA story. Well, you’d be wrong. And not half wrong, but all wrong. (How many half-jokes can we fit into this review? Because if a half-joke is a joke that is only kinda funny, well, I’m full of those - just ask my students...)

The story starts as one might expect after having read the back of the book: boy prince who unexpectedly becomes king only to have it snatched away from him, thus igniting a revenge story. That does indeed cover the first few chapters, and while revenge is the motivating force for our heroic half king, it’s not a glorious revenge (well, the book is glorious, but the revenge is sour). Half a King is an intelligent and powerful combination of adventure and vengeance filtered through the lens that reminds the reader revenge rarely turns out the way you think it should.

What’s not immediately clear by either the cover art nor the back cover blurb is that this book is less fantasy and more viking. Some of the beginning descriptions confused me until I stopped trying to visualize it like Game of Thrones, and instead visualized it like Eric the Red.

One aspect that I find most impressive about the book is how lean and focused the writing is. Let’s be honest: when was the last time you read a great fantasy book that didn’t require a six month’s leave of absence to finish? Half a King is fit and trim. There is only one point of view, characters come and go, and the plot moves quickly. There were so many scenes that could have been explored, but Abercrombie only tackles what it right and what is necessary. And so the book feels focused. It’s fantastic.

The other reason I find this book so appealing is because I can’t think of another YA author writing in this non-magical fantasy setting. Most other YA fantasy books are bursting (sometimes stupidly so) with magic and flighty fantasy: Harry Potter, Eragon, The Lightning Thief all come to mind. But Abercrombie has created a mature fictional world. It comes with normal men and women who kill or are killed, who beat or are beaten, who cheat or are cheated, who do what they must to survive. It is fascinating and heartbreaking to watch good characters try to navigate this gray and murky place.

As YA fantasy lit, the novel is new and fresh. Don’t worry if you found Abercrombie too vulgar, violent or lewd in the past. Half a King dials down the sex and gore by many factors, but Harry Potter this ain't - people die and life is miserable, even if you do have traveling companions at your back. Half a King will appeal to a wide range of high schoolers and adults alike. The novel is intense and lean, immersive and visceral. There is no reason for you not to pick it up. This is Joe Abercrombie’s best book yet, and you will love it. I certainly did.

    An excellent read
    By Natashalh
I think anyone who dislikes Half a King on the basis of it being YA should read a few other contemporary YA fantasy books for comparison. With a few exceptions, this series is head and shoulders above the rest of the YA fantasy genre.

If you're looking for the extreme "grittiness" of Abercrombie's other books, then this may not be for you. If you'd like a quick, enjoyable read with a tight story and great writing, then you'll probably enjoy Half a King. It's sold as "young adult," but it is infinitely better written than most of the YA fantasy I've read. Although some reviewers complained that the plot was simple or felt rushed, I appreciate that it's lean and to the point. I love a long, rambling epic, too, but it's refreshing to read something that feels planned. It's a quick read (and the Kindle price is great!), so it's a good book for when you aren't looking for a huge time investment.

Because the book has more material than is needed for a one-semester course, you will also have a useful reference for subsequent courses in manufacturing, materials, design, or materials selection. The Askeland text emphasizes a science-based approach to materials engineering that highlights how the structure of materials at various length scales gives rise to materials properties. This connection between structure and properties is key to innovating with materials, both in the synthesis of new materials and enabling new applications with existing materials. The science-based approach highlights how materials change with time and due to loading and environment - a key concept that is often overlooked when using charts and databases to select materials.

Soft Skills Training: A Workbook to Develop Skills for Employment, by Frederick H. Wentz

I was hired by a major university to teach recently released offenders how to become employed. I walked into my first class intending to follow the lead of all the other job training programs in the city, which was teaching the students to properly fill out applications, write resumes, facilitate mock interviews, and locate employment opportunities. After the first couple of classes, most of the students were either not paying attention or sleeping. I quickly realized my presentation needed to be interesting, challenging, beneficial, and actually guide the participants on how to remain employed. However, I was unable to find any published material for teaching new hires the soft skills necessary to keep a job. This workbook is a compilation of the soft skills class material I have developed over an eighteen year period. I have used this material with great success and have taught soft skills in schools, inner-city church programs, nonprofits, and government funded job training programs. It is a unique collection of essays, exercises, quotes, and maxims that will give students a realistic perspective on work-related expectations and the expectations of the supervisors who hire them. It will help students develop their problem solving skills, guide them in making appropriate decisions, and create a desire to plan out goals and achieve them. The workbook style is challenging and playful, serious and engaging and a stepping stone to developing the cognitive skills necessary to quash unproductive thinking and self-defeating emotional behaviors.

An Excellent Workbook On Soft Skills Training
    By Alan E. Mushen
I have taught special education and vocation classes for twenty-five years at the high school and community college level. This author utilized materials to work with recently released offenders, and the comprehensive workbook is interesting, beneficial, challenging, and offers practical examples or exercises on how to obtain employment and remain employed. The Instructor Manual can be purchased separately, and it is a terrific addition to the workbook. I will be working with individuals who recently graduated from high school and need knowledge in career development and work skills. Using this workbook will be an excellent addition to my lesson plans. I highly recommending purchasing it.

Great resource for any career training classroom!
    By Lmm999
I am a career and technical education teacher- Animal Science, but took a summer position in the incarcerated youth program. I came across this book when looking for resources in that position that I could use that would actually help these students be successful once they are able to go out into the real world and attempt to gain employment. So far, I love using this book! It is practical and down to earth in its wording. I plan to incorporate this into my Animal Science curriculum as well, because these skills are applicable to all students and is what they need to be successfully employed. There may be a few small parts I omit as I use it in that setting as they are more relevant to incarcerated youth, but for the most part this is an excellent resource for any classroom in which you need to train students in job skills. A helpful hint: There is an instructor manual available for answers, just follow the directions in the book and e-mail the writer. Mr. Wentz is fast to respond and very helpful. Also, if you are looking at the accompanying workbook, some of the material is the same, but has a few extra resources. I find myself working mostly through the training book at the moment. I have already discussed this text with my administrator and my colleagues. I would like to update review this after I have the opportunity to use it this upcoming school year. I am really happy I came across this and recommend for any career training classroom.

Fabulous, engaging resource for a non-traditional student
    By nutterbutter
I am a Career Counselor to former addicts. My first week I could tell they weren't engaged. (I am usually a high school college bound guidance counselor. So these were new students for me.) I bought this book and the Soft Skills Training Workbook and my class now takes an ACTIVE interest in learning positive job skills. If there were 10 stars I would rate this book and the workbook that high. These guys asked if we could work ahead!!! By using an email given in the books you can contact the author who is very helpful and professional. He will send you a teacher's guide on a pdf file. If you are working with the under employed, those who have been out of the job market for a time or teach a vocational class you NEED this book. Well worth its cost. It's fun to see students this excited about getting AND keeping a job.

The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World's Most Precious Manuscripts, by Joshua Hammer

To save ancient Arabic texts from Al Qaeda, a band of librarians pulls off a brazen heist worthy of Ocean’s Eleven in this “fast-paced narrative that is…part intellectual history, part geopolitical tract, and part out-and-out thriller” (The Washington Post).

In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library, Abdel Kader Haidara, journeyed across the Sahara Desert and along the Niger River, tracking down and salvaging tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts that were crumbling in the trunks of desert shepherds. His goal: to preserve this crucial part of the world’s patrimony in a gorgeous library. But then Al Qaeda showed up at the door.

“Part history, part scholarly adventure story, and part journalist survey….Joshua Hammer writes with verve and expertise” (The New York Times Book Review) about how Haidara, a mild-mannered archivist from the legendary city of Timbuktu, became one of the world’s greatest smugglers by saving the texts from sure destruction. With bravery and patience, Haidara organized a dangerous operation to sneak all 350,000 volumes out of the city to the safety of southern Mali. His heroic heist “has all the elements of a classic adventure novel” (The Seattle Times), and is a reminder that ordinary citizens often do the most to protect the beauty of their culture. His the story is one of a man who, through extreme circumstances, discovered his higher calling and was changed forever by it.

    Review
**New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice**

“This is, simply, a fantastic story, one that has been beautifully told by Josh Hammer, who knows and loves Mali like some farmers know their back forty. At a time of unprecedented cultural destruction taking place across the Muslim world, Abdel Kader Haidara, the savior of Timbuktu's ancient manuscripts and this book's main character, is a true hero. If you are feeling despair about the fate of the world, The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu is a must-read, and a welcome shot in the arm.” (Jon Lee Anderson, author of The Fall of Baghdad)

“[The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu] has all the elements of a classic adventure novel [and] it is a story that couldn’t be more timely. . . . Suffice it to say that [the librarians] earn their “bad ass” sobriquet several times over. Riveting skullduggery, revealing history and current affairs combine in a compelling narrative with a rare happy ending.” (Seattle Times)

“The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu . . . vividly captures the history and strangeness of [Timbuktu] in a fast-paced narrative that gets us behind today’s headlines of war and terror. This is part reportage and travelogue . . . part intellectual history, part geopolitical tract and part out-and-out thriller." (Washington Post)

“I’ve long known that the versatile Joshua Hammer could drop into the midst of a war or political conflict anywhere in the world and make sense of it. But he has outdone himself this time, and found an extraordinary, moving story of a quiet—and successful—act of great bravery in the face of destructive fanaticism.” (Adam Hochschild, author of King Leopold's Ghost and To End All Wars)

“Part history, part scholarly adventure story and part journalist survey of the volatile religious politics of the Maghreb region. . . . Hammer writes with verve and expertise.” (New York Times Book Review)

"A picaresque and mysterious adventure that rushes across the strife-torn landscape of today’s Mali, The Bad-Ass Librarians tells the unlikely but very real story of a band of bookish heroes from Timbuktu and their desperate race—past dangerous checkpoints, through deserts, and often in the dead of night—to save a culture and a civilization from destruction. Josh Hammer has seen firsthand how ordinary people can respond with extraordinary heroism when faced with evil. He also gives us a dramatic example of what it means to stick with a story; he knows this one from the beginnings in the late 1300s up until the present day, with its extremism and acts of cultural repression and erasure. Hammer has an unerring sense of what matters and his storytelling is impassioned and fun at the same time." (Amy Wilentz, author of Farewell, Fred Voodoo)

"Gripping [and] ultimately moving. . . . History depends on whose stories get told and which books survive; in Timbuktu, thanks to Haidara and his associates, inquiry, humanity, and courage live on in the libraries." (Boston Globe)

"A completely engrossing adventure with a sharp--and prescient--political edge. Josh Hammer, a veteran correspondent of numerous conflict zones, tells a fascinating story about the quest to save Timbuktu’s priceless Islamic writings from the grasp of jihadists. This is an entertaining, and extremely timely, book about the value of art and history and the excesses of religious extremism." (Janet Reitman, author of Inside Scientology)

“Hammer has pulled off the truly remarkable here—a book that is both important and a delight to read. The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu is the wonderfully gripping story of Abdel Kader Haidara and the hundreds of ordinary Malians who, at great personal danger, endeavored to save the ancient fabled manuscripts of Timbuktu from destruction by Islamic jihadists. It is also an inspirational reminder that, even as the forces of barbarism extend their thrall across so much of the Muslim world, there are still those willing to risk everything to preserve civilization. A superb rendering of a story that needs to be told.” (Scott Anderson, author of Lawrence in Arabia)

“This book is a particularly adventurous and impressive example of the fact that, even with time, water, fire, mold, and termites, humanity remains the greatest threat to books and our literary, historical, and creative heritage.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

"While the destructive acts of Islamic extremists worldwide capture headlines, countless stories of heroic resistance rarely receive attention. Award-winning journalist Hammer shines a light on one such episode of bravery and defiance. . . . Bad-Ass Librarians is a rousing salute to ordinary civilians who make a stand to preserve cultural heritage against all odds." (Discover Magazine)

"Hammer tells the dramatic story of how, during the period of Islamist rule, a group of Timbuktu residents saved some 350,000 ancient manuscripts that had resided in the city since its medieval heyday as a great center of learning and scholarship. . . . In addition to weaving a great yarn, Hammer also provides a fascinating history of Timbuktu and its books and a well-informed account of the struggle against Islamist extremism in the Sahel." (Foreign Affairs Magazine)

“There are nail-biting moments when everything hangs in the balance [and] one can almost imagine the movie version. . . . Excellent.” (Dallas Morning News)

"Gripping. . . . The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu tells the tale of how a gutsy collector saved thousands of documents. . . . It was only because of Abdel Kader Haidara and a group of brave librarians that these manuscripts about poetry, music, sex, and science did not end lost in the desert or up in smoke." (Salon)

“On one level, The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu is a thriller that revolves around one long chase scene, as librarian race through the deserts of Mali trying to salvage a trove of precious manuscripts from jihadists hell-bent on their destruction. The stakes in this chase are no less than civilization itself. On another level, Joshua Hammer’s book is about a struggle between Islamic ideologies—one jihadist, inflexible and violent, and the other open and intellectual. Joshua Hammer’s book could not be more relevant to today’s events.” (Barbara Demick, author of Nothing To Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea)

“Hammer crafts a thoughtful history of the Middle East and Africa in a narrative that goes beyond the one- and two-dimensional views that are popular today [and] provides a geopolitical explainer that gives context to the development of radical Islam. . . . The book’s title isn’t overstated. Haidara, and those who aided him, truly are ‘bad-ass.’” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

“The sources of Timbuktu’s vitality—the connections to travel and trade that once made it a meeting place for West Africans and a haven for writing and learning—have been destroyed, and Hammer’s book, to its great credit, makes us see what a loss that is.” (New York Review of Books)

"Hammer does a service to Haidara and the Islamic faith by providing the illuminating history of these manuscripts, managing to weave the complicated threads of this recent segment of history into a thrilling story." (Publishers Weekly)

"[A] vivid, fast-paced narrative. . . . Hammer draws on many—often dangerous—visits to the city and interviews with major players to chronicle the efforts of Abdel Kader Haidara to save priceless literary and historical manuscripts. . . . A chilling portrait of a country under siege and one man's defiance." (Kirkus Reviews)

“Atonce a history, caper and thriller.” (The Economist)

“A jaunty gem of a book.... The greatest merit of The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu is that it convincingly repudiates extremist Islamism at the quotidian level, at which it does not pose a global threat: it is objectionable not just because it imperils Westerners, their friends and the existing political order, but also because it is socially and intellectually retrograde, and abusive of the people it purports to protect.” (Survival (International Institute for Strategic Studies))

“As precarious and fraught with obstacles as any Hollywood heist. . . . Both a moving story of quiet heroism and a fascinating glimpse into a country little-known in the U.S., The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu will appeal to historians, bibliophiles and those who love a good heist narrative.” (Shelf Awareness)

    “Illuminating reading.” (Booklist)

“An engaging, well-plotted historical adventure that will appeal to history and book lovers.” (Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

"Engrossing. . . . To call this book a page-turner is to diminish it; the suspense that Hammer creates is vital, but it’s his shrewd reporting on cultural terrorism--and those who fought against it--that makes The Bad-Ass Librarians so important. No book lover should miss it." (Fine Books & Collections Magazine)

“Hammer gives the badass librarians of Timbuktu—who outwitted al-Qaeda, saving ancient Arabic texts from being destroyed—their due.” (Vanity Fair)

“An engrossing tale, complete with a dangerous smuggling operation.” (Bustle (Best Books of April))

“[A] powerful narrative. . . . Hammer’s clearly written and engaging chronicle of the achievements of Timbuktu, the risks presented to this area, and portraits of several brave and dedicated individuals brings to light an important and unfamiliar story.” (Library Journal)

    "Gripping." (Houston Chronicle)

"Hammer exposed my ignorance. Without thinking about it, I had accepted the conventional wisdom . . . but The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu provides irrefutable evidence that culture and learning in Africa were far more advanced than in Europe by the 16th century when Timbuktu flourished as a center of learning." (Washington Independent Review of Books)

"Journalist Josh Hammer deftly offers up a string of interconnected tales, ranging from ancient Islamic scholarship to in-fighting in US political circles to French military campaigns and the rise of radical extremists throughout Africa. . . . But always front and center is the fate of these manuscripts and how their very existence puts a lie to the hateful extremism fueling the terrorists who would destroy them. Librarians are always bad-ass but even the most hardcore would have to tip their hats to the brave ones depicted here." (BookFilter)

The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu 1
Abdel Kader Haidara was a small boy when he first learned about the hidden treasures of Timbuktu. In the Haidaras’ large house in Sankor, the city’s oldest neighborhood, he often heard his father mention them under his breath, as if reluctantly revealing a family secret. Dozens of young boarders from across the Sahel region of Africa, the vast, arid belt that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, came to study mathematics, science, astrology, jurisprudence, Arabic, and the Koran at the traditional school that his father ran in the vestibule of their home. Consisting of three three-hour sessions beginning before dawn and continuing, at intervals, until the early hours of the evening, the Haidara School was a throwback to the informal universities that had flourished in Timbuktu during its heyday as a center of learning in the sixteenth century. There were thousands of manuscripts at the house in Timbuktu, locked away in tin chests in a storage room behind a heavy oak door. Haidara had a sense of their importance, but he knew very little about them.

Sometimes his father would rummage through the storage room and emerge with a volume from his family’s collection—a treatise about Islamic jurisprudence from the early twelfth century; a thirteenth-century Koran written on vellum made from the hide of an antelope; another holy book from the twelfth century, no larger than the palm of a hand, inscribed on fish skin, its intricate Maghrebi script illuminated with droplets of gold leaf. One of his father’s most prized works was the original travel diary of Major Alexander Gordon Laing, a Scotsman who had been the first European explorer to reach Timbuktu via Tripoli and the Sahara, and who was betrayed, robbed, and murdered by his Arab nomadic escorts shortly after departing from the city in 1826. A few years after Laing’s murder, a scribe had written a primer of Arabic grammar over the explorer’s papers—an early example of recycling. Haidara would peer over his father’s shoulder as he gathered students around him, regarding the crumbling works with curiosity. Over time he learned about the manuscripts’ history, and how to protect them. Haidara spoke Songhoy, the language of Mali’s Sorhai tribe, the dominant sedentary ethnic group along the northern bend of the Niger River, and in school he studied French, the language of Mali’s former colonial masters. But he also taught himself to read Arabic fluently as a boy, and his interest in the manuscripts grew.

In those days—the late 1960s and early 1970s—Timbuktu was linked to the outside world only by riverboats that plied the Niger River when the water level was high enough, and once weekly flights on the state-owned airline to Bamako, the capital of Mali, 440 air miles away. Haidara, the sixth child among twelve brothers and sisters, had little awareness of his town’s isolation. He, his siblings, and their friends fished and swam in a five-mile-long canal that led from the western edge of Timbuktu to the Niger. The third longest river in Africa, it is a boomerang-shaped stream that originates in the highlands of Guinea and meanders for one thousand miles through Mali, forming lakes and floodplains, before curving east just below Timbuktu, then flowing through Niger and Nigeria and spilling into the Gulf of Guinea. The canal was the most vibrant corner of the city, a gathering point for children, market women, and traders in dugout canoes, or pirogues, piled high with fruits and vegetables from the irrigated farms that flourished beside the Niger. It was also a place redolent with bloody history: Tuareg warriors hiding on the reed-covered bank on Christmas Day 1893 had ambushed and massacred two French military officers and eighteen African sailors as they paddled a canoe up from the Niger.

Haidara and his friends explored every corner of the Sankor neighborhood, a labyrinth of sandy alleys lined with the shrines of Sufi saints, and the fourteenth-century Sankor Mosque—a lopsided mud pyramid with permanent scaffolding made from bundles of palm sticks embedded in the clay. They played soccer in the sandy field in front of the mosque and climbed the lush mango trees that proliferated in Timbuktu in those days, before the southward advance of desertification caused many of them to wither and die, and the canal to dry out and fill with sand. There were few cars, no tourists, no disturbances from the outside world; it was, Haidara would recall decades later, a largely carefree and contented existence.

Abdel Kader’s father, Mohammed “Mamma” Haidara, was a pious, learned, and adventurous man who deeply influenced his son. Born in the late 1890s in Bamba, a village hugging the left bank of the Niger River, 115 miles east of Timbuktu, Mamma Haidara had come of age when Mali, then known as French West Sudan—a mlange of ethnic groups stretching from the forests and savannah of the far south, near Guinea and Senegal, to the arid wastes of the far north, toward the Algerian border—had still not fallen under total French control. Fiercely independent Tuareg nomads in the Sahara were carrying on armed resistance, galloping on camels out of the dunes, ambushing the colonial army with spears and swords. It was not until 1916 that they would be completely subdued. After learning to read and write in French colonial schools, Mamma Haidara had commenced a life of travel and study. He had little money, but he was able to hitch rides on camel caravans, and, because he was literate, he could support himself along the way holding informal classes in the Koran and other subjects.

At seventeen he journeyed to the ancient imperial capital of Gao, two hundred miles along the river east of Timbuktu, and to the desert oasis of Araouan, a walled town famed for its scholars and a stop on the ancient salt caravan route through the Sahara. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and for an understanding of the world, he traveled to Sokoto, the seat of a powerful nineteenth-century Islamic kingdom in what is now Nigeria; to Alexandria and Cairo; and to Khartoum, the Sudanese capital situated at the confluence of the White and Blue Niles, and its twin city, Omdurman, across the river, where the army of Major General Horatio Herbert Kitchener defeated a force led by an Islamic revivalist and anticolonialist called the Mahdi in 1895 and established British rule over Sudan.

After a decade of wandering Mamma Haidara returned an educated man, and was named by the scholars of Bamba the town’s qadi, the Islamic judicial authority responsible for mediating property disputes and presiding over marriages and divorces. He brought back illuminated Korans and other manuscripts from Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria, and Chad, adding to a family library in Bamba that his ancestors had begun amassing in the sixteenth century. Eventually Mamma Haidara settled in Timbuktu, opened a school, made money trading grain and livestock, purchased land, and wrote his own manuscripts about reading the stars, and the genealogy of the clans of the city. Scholars from across the region often stayed with the family, and local people visited to receive from the Islamic savant a fatwa—a ruling on a point of Islamic law.

In 1964, four years after Mali won its independence from France, a delegation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris convened in Timbuktu. UNESCO historians had read books written by Ibn Batuta, perhaps the greatest traveler of the medieval world, who visited the land that is now Mali in the first half of the fourteenth century; and Hassan Mohammed Al Wazzan Al Zayati, who wrote under the pen name Leo Africanus while held under house arrest by the pope in Rome during the sixteenth century. The travelers described a vibrant culture of manuscript writing and book collecting centered in Timbuktu. European historians and philosophers had contended that black Africans were illiterates with no history, but Timbuktu’s manuscripts proved the opposite—that a sophisticated, freethinking society had thrived south of the Sahara at a time when much of Europe was still mired in the Middle Ages. That culture had been driven underground during the Moroccan conquest of Timbuktu in 1591, then had flourished in the eighteenth century, only to vanish again during seventy years of French colonization. Owners had hidden manuscripts in holes in the ground, in secret closets, and in storage rooms. UNESCO experts resolved to create a center to recover the region’s lost heritage, restore to Timbuktu a semblance of its former glory, and prove to the world that Sub-Saharan Africa had once produced works of genius. UNESCO gathered notables to encourage collectors to bring the manuscripts out from their hiding places.

Nine years later, Mamma Haidara, then in his seventies, started working for the Ahmed Baba Institute of Higher Learning and Islamic Research, created by UNESCO in Timbuktu and funded by the ruling families of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Mamma Haidara lent fifteen volumes to the Ahmed Baba Institute’s first public exhibition, then traveled house to house in Timbuktu, knocking on doors, trying to persuade other collectors to donate their hidden manuscripts. He was part of a great campaign of education, Abdel Kader Haidara recalled, that was greeted, for the most part, with suspicion and incomprehension. The work intrigued Abdel Kader, but he couldn’t imagine following in his father’s footsteps. There didn’t seem to be much of a future in it.

Mamma Haidara died after a long illness in 1981 in his mid-eighties, when Abdel Kader was seventeen. The notables of the town, along with officials responsible for distributing inheritances, called a meeting of the Haidara family. Abdel Kader, his mother, many of his siblings, and representatives of several brothers and sisters who couldn’t attend jammed the vestibule of the family house in Timbuktu’s Sankor neighborhood to listen to a reading of the will. The elder Haidara had left behind land in Bamba, much livestock, a sizable fortune from a grain-trading business, as well as his vast manuscript collection—five thousand works in Timbuktu and perhaps eight times that number in the ancestral home in Bamba. The estate executor divided up the patriarch’s businesses, animals, property, and money among the siblings. Then, following a long-standing tradition within the Sorhai tribe, he announced that Mamma Haidara had designated a single heir as the custodian of the family’s library. The executor looked around the room. The siblings leaned forward.

“Abdel Kader,” the executor announced, “you are the one.”

Haidara received the news in astonished silence. Although he was the most studious of the twelve siblings, read and wrote Arabic fluently, and had long shown a fascination for the manuscripts, he could not have imagined that his father would entrust their care to somebody so young. The executor enumerated his responsibilities. “You have no right to give the manuscripts away, and no right to sell them,” he said. “You have the duty to preserve and protect them.” Haidara was unsure what his new role would portend, and was concerned whether he was up to the job. He knew only that the burden was great.

In 1984, Haidara’s mother died after a five-month illness, a loss that deeply affected him. She had been a warm, loving counterpart to Mamma Haidara, who could be a stern disciplinarian. At six years old, Abdel Kader had earned a reputation for fighting with other neighborhood boys, and his father, to rein him in, had dispatched him to study at a Koranic school deep in the Sahara, an austere encampment 150 miles north of Timbuktu. Haidara would describe with affection years later how his mother had labored over the cooking fire in the family courtyard, preparing perfumed rice, couscous, and other treats, then had packed the food into a basket to help ease the journey and provide sustenance throughout the month-long Koranic course. When his mother’s food had run out, young Haidara had stopped eating, and the sheikh in charge had shipped him back in exasperation to his parents in Timbuktu.

Immediately after the funeral of Haidara’s mother, the director of the Ahmed Baba Institute came to the Haidara home to pay his respects. “I need you to come and see me,” he told Haidara, cryptically. A month later Haidara hadn’t shown up. Still coping with his grief, he had totally forgotten about the request. The director dispatched his driver to Haidara’s home. “Please come with me,” the driver said.

The director, Mahmoud Zouber, greeted Haidara at the Ahmed Baba Institute, a quadrangle of limestone buildings with Moorish archways enclosing a sand courtyard planted with date palms and desert acacias. Then in his thirties, Zouber was already regarded as one of the most accomplished scholars in northern Africa. He had started his career as a teacher at a French-Arabic high school in Timbuktu, studied on a Malian government fellowship at Al Azhar University in Cairo, the world’s most prestigious center of Islamic scholarship, and earned his PhD in West African history at the Sorbonne in Paris. Zouber had written his doctoral thesis on the life of Ahmed Baba, a famous intellectual of Timbuktu’s Golden Age, who had been captured by the Moroccan invaders in 1591 and taken as a slave to Marrakesh. Chosen director of the Ahmed Baba Institute in 1973, while still in his twenties, Zouber had raised hundreds of thousands of dollars from Kuwait and Iraq to construct the institute’s headquarters. Then he had built up the archive from nothing—starting with the fifteen manuscripts borrowed from Mamma Haidara’s collection.

A small, courtly man from Mali’s Peul tribe, traditionally farmers and herders who lived along the bend in the Niger River between Timbuktu and Gao, he took Haidara gently by the arm and escorted him through the courtyard and into his office. “Look,” said Zouber. “We worked a lot with your father. He did a great job collecting and educating the population about the manuscripts. And I hope that you will come to work with us as well.”

“Thanks, but I really don’t want to,” Haidara replied. He was contemplating a career in business, perhaps following his father into livestock and grain trading. He wanted to make money, he would explain years later. What he did not want to do, he was quite sure, was spend his days toiling in or for a library.

The director chased Haidara down a second time a few months later. Again he dispatched his driver to Haidara’s home, and summoned him back to the institute. “You have to come,” he said. “I’m going to train you to do this. You’ve got a great responsibility.”

Haidara again mumbled his gratitude for the offer, but politely declined.

“You are the custodian of a great intellectual tradition,” Zouber persisted.

The institute was facing difficulties, the director confided. For the past ten years, a team of eight prospectors had embarked on one hundred separate missions in search of manuscripts. In a decade of driving through the bush in a convoy of four-wheel-drive vehicles, they had accumulated just 2,500 works—an average of less than one a day. After decades of thievery by the French colonial army, the owners had become fiercely protective of their manuscripts and deeply distrustful of government institutions. The appearance of Ahmed Baba prospectors raised alarms that they had come to steal their precious family heirlooms. “Every time they drive into the villages, people are terrified. They hide everything,” Zouber told Haidara, looking him in the eye. “I think that if you come and work for us you’re going to help us bring out the manuscripts. It’s going to be a challenge, but you can do it.”

Good story, well-told, but with quibbles.
    By wrangler
This is a fascinating tale and well told by Joshua Hammer. But there are quibbles, most of which we can attribute to the publisher's editors and fact-checkers.
Proofing/editing errors are scattered throughout the book The author says Northwestern University is in Chicago. It is in Evanston. The text says B-52 bombers carry "70,000 tons of weapons." In fact they carry 70,000 pounds of weapons.
The book was apparently written in sections and characters are re-identified in chapter-after-chapter.
It's nit-picking, I know, but that's what editors, proof-readers and fact checkers are for.

A Great Story, But Not as Well Executed as I Would Have Liked.
    By C. Henig
Timbuktu is one of those words that just sounds exotic and interesting - or so I thought when I discovered it on the globe as a child. That it was an Islamic center of learning in Africa was something I discovered in Scales of Gold, a novel in the Niccolo series by Dorothy Dunnett. Her hero ends up there and is caught up in the violence of one of its periodic political upheavals. Then as I read more and more about Islamic history in Africa, the importance of this city was impressed on me. The destruction of such a center of learning and such a repository of books would rival the destruction of Alexandria.
I first heard about Joshua Hammer's book as he was interviewed on the PBS Newshour, and I immediately ordered it. I am glad I did because it is a truly amazing story of how a man dedicated to saving the literary and religious heritage of his city and people saved it from destruction by the jihadists sweeping down into Mali to destroy it from Libya. After seeing what cultural destruction was wrought at the hands of jihadists in Afghanistan, there is no doubt that if Al Queda of the Islam Maghreb has found these documents they all would have been destroyed. They did destroy what they did find. But one librarian, Abdel Kader Haidara, prevented the destruction of Timbuktu's heritage. My deep thanks to Mr. Hammer for bringing us this story.
Now the quibble. I do not know who decides supporting documentation for non-fiction books. The person who decided that one incomplete map, incorrectly identified as a "map of Timbuktu" (it isn't; it's a map of Mali) as the front inside cover would be sufficient was quite wrong. Mali isn't a country that most people know well. It doesn't help much that throughout the entire book Timbuktu is spelled consistently as "Timbuktu", which is the usual spelling, but the map spells it as "Tombouctou". If this is the correct spell, use it. A detailed map w/ all the towns and cities mentioned in this book would have allowed readers to follow the story more easily. And if the consistently and correct and inform us. If the map had rivers on it, we could have followed the path the documents took as they were saved. It also would have been helpful to have had a street map of Timbuktu to see the layout of the building referenced in the story. And some photos of the buildings and people involved would have been useful. I suppose all of this was omitted to save costs and get the book published more quickly. I would have preferred to wait for them. The manuscript on the back inside cover is lovely. But there is absolutely nothing which identifies it other than a generic "manuscript page". That's helpful but not very. The story is told in bits and starts and could have used a better editor to smooth out the narrative. And I have no idea in the world why the title. It was clearly meat to make the book jump of the sales counters. But it is an odd note for a serious story. These may not seem like serious quibbles to other people, but they greatly hampered my enjoyment of this book.

Be ready to research while reading
    By Darlene M. Schueler
What an amazing history lesson rolled into a story about saving manuscripts. I had to keep a map of Northern Africa handy as the Mali map inside the book was inadequate. I'd love to have a flow chart or linear chart to keep track of the timeline and key characters, but it's manageable without. The author writes in a circular form but it's pretty much the only way to present such cumulative history. You will learn much about the radical Islamist movement both throughout history and to present day. Do read the epilogue and acknowledgements for even further knowledge. I'd love to see some of the preserved texts.
