Beyond criticism at this point in time

Theroux's epic collection of train journeys is a classic of travel literature, packed with unforgettable scenes and characters, the CIA agents living on the beach in Vietnam, the Japanese porn shows, and the sadness in Afghanistan. We see these again with the perspective of more time and the pass of history between his journeys and our journeys (real or via CNN). We could criticize the lack of political correctness, or of the curmudgeonly ways of Mr. Theroux, but hopping on trains all over Asia, regardless of the local political environment, and writing beautifully about the trips is a lot harder to criticize. This the starting point with Theroux, if you like it here, you'll love Dark Star Safari and will collect a good pile of books. They make excellent books to read during your own travels. If it's not your thing, then try a Theroux novel, maybe Hotel Honolulu and see if that works better for you.

Great literature ? I think not...but fun none the less!

So yeah. Its not great literature. Did you really expect it to be? Its a chapter book based on a tv cartoon--adjust your expectations and you'll be fine.

My son has read it twice and its in his pile of books to read (for a third time). What more can you say than it has Ben 10 and encourages hard-to-please boy readers in the 7-10 age group to pick up a book instead of a video game and read!

Handwriting in a high tech world

Despite all the hoopla surrounding the paperless society, I (and everyone I know that I have informally polled) find myself writing plenty for business and for pleasure. In fact, my motivation for purchasing and reading this book came from my children. They told me with that innocent honesty that they couldn't read the letters that I sent to camp for them. When I offered to type the letters, they told me that they would rather keep it the way it was, because they liked to get them even though they couldn't (save the oldest, who was recruited as translator) read them. I was struck with the truth; you give something extra of yourself when you write your own words in your own hand.
I found this to be the only book on the subject for adults at the local bookstore at that time. I read the introductory chapters with scepticism as it tried to point out the characteristics of handwriting that have been related to personality type, but that's my bias. It was entertaining enough otherwise, and there were some signatures of famous people that were interesting. The meat was next: 1)a discussion of why handwriting is generally done poorly in this country 2) a plan to improve handwriting by a combination of exercises. This book leaves you to design your own exercises within a general overall framework provided by the author. I was highly motivated, so that was enough for me. Others might have preferred a more step-by-step approach. I was introduced to an economical form of cursive writing and invited to incorporate aspects of it into my own style.
The result of my 30 day exploration was significant. Others at work who saw me doing the exercises on my free time became interested in the process. My handwriting improved in readability and style because of better small muscle function in my hand, but more because my perception of what constituted readable script had changed. My eye was interpreted my own handwriting differently. In the last 3 years, my handwriting remains much different and more easily read than before. The quality of my work in healthcare has improved because people read my handwriting without difficulty, and more of it gets read. And the kids can read what comes to camp.

Wonderful Book that Really Works

This is a wonderful book that really works. Every since I was an elementary school child I had been plagued by feelings of inferiority because of my atrocious handwriting. In my late teens, in an effort to solve this problem, I gave up cursive writing all together and tried block printing. This was slow and tedious and the results were scarcely more legible. My handwriting was still a joke, so bad that even I found it impossible to read.
Beautiful handwiting has always held a fascination with me and I love the simplicity of pencil or pen on paper. After frequent attempts to write more neatly however, I assumed that this was a skill that was beyond me: my poor handwriting was something I would have to live with. I did so - for many years.
In my late 30's I found this book in a second hand book shop and purchased it immediately. Improving my handwriting took longer than 30 days, but after half a year of practise I suddenly began to recieve compliments on my penmanship. The high point came when a student approached me after a class (I am a teacher) and mentioned how much she admired my writing.
Rather than stressing individual letters, Paula breaks down handwriting into a series of basic shapes and stresses rhythm instead. Students work at writing down a series of patterns such as "waves" or "hoops." I found performing these exercises to be enjoyable and relaxing and did most of my practise, about 10 minutes every day, during a series of tedious staff meetings. After 30 days there was definately some improvement but in my case several months were necessary before I could feel confident going public with my new skill.*
I wanted to buy a copy of this book for a friend and was shocked to see it was no longer in print. Someone should reprint it. I would like to use this message board to publicly thank Paula and commend her for being an excellent teacher.
(*Unfortunately my happiness was short lived. A year later I developed RSI from excessive computer use and this, of course, desroyed my ability to write.)

About the Author
Cindy Schwarz is a Professor of Physics at Vassar College. She earned a BSc in Mathematical Physics at the State University of New York at Binghamton and a PhD in experimental particle physics from Yale University. She remained active in the research field of particle physics from her arrival at Vassar in 1985 through 1992, working on experiments in high-energy physics at Brookhaven. She changed her line of scholarship in the mid-nineties to focus on pedagogy and curriculum design, with a focus on teaching and learning with technology and producing materials appropriate for those students not planning to major in physics (or even science). Cindy is the sole author of three books, co-author on another book, author of one interactive CD-ROM, five articles, articles in Microsoft Encarta 2000, an interactive tutorial on the internet, and editor and publisher of Tales from the Subatomic Zoo. She has also published along with Jill Linz a children's book Adventures in Atomville: The Macroscope, which is available in print in English and Spanish and on nook, kindle and ibooks. Cindy's first book A Tour of the Subatomic Zoo, published by Springer-Verlag was reviewed in Physics Today, The Physics Teacher, Choice and Scitech Book News. Scitech said 'A great little book, and if every physics textbook were like this, physics classrooms would be crowded'. The book also won the 1993 American Library Association Award for Outstanding Academic Book. Cindy is considered an expert on teaching particle physics to non-physicists as she has given numerous talks, workshops and keynotes and her book is used at other Universities. Her second book, Interactive Physics Workbook, was the first of its kind. Now out in a second edition, the book is a compilation of 40 computer simulations specifically designed to make use of the technology for effective pedagogy and therefore improved student learning (and interest). This book has some value, hence 2 stars not one. But slogging through student essays on how quarks date (really!)is insufferable.
Get Gordan Kane's "The Particle Garden" and get more.

My own children read "A Tour of the Subatomic Zoo" and enjoyed it a great deal

As a physicist and educator I can really appreciate Prof. Schwarz's text. My own children read "A Tour of the Subatomic Zoo" and enjoyed it a great deal. The biggest issue with putting particle physics into perspective is the lack of intuition and the overwhelming mathematics. This book puts particles into perspective while building an intuition about particle physics and quantum mechanics. This text is appropriate for the novice or scientist looking for light reading and a deeper comprehensive understanding of the topic.

In his book Equipped for Good Work: A Guide for Pastors, Dr. Joe H. Cothen taught how to be a pastor. Now he addresses preaching and reminds the pastor that preaching is at the center of what he does.

Effective preachers vary the styles of their sermons in order to continually connect with the members of their congregation and to spread the Good News. Consistently negative fire-and-brimstone sermons would quickly lose their impact, and the listeners would lose interest.

Those perhaps most likely to lose interest are the teenage attendees. For the pastor, teenagers prove to be a particularly elusive and fickle audience; after all, they do know everything.

What teenagers need to know, however, are the lessons to be learned from the Bible. Chapter 12, "The Pulpit Is Waiting for the Man Who Can Speak to the Needs of Youth," addresses the needs and concerns of teenagers with several sermons that follow the "It Could Happen to You . . ." format. The sermons address running with the wrong crowd, dating carefully, and maintaining control.

Other chapters address the congregation as a whole and deal with such subjects as the Bible, evangelism, and discipleship.

In addition to the text, the pastor will also benefit from the helpful appendixes, including: "Used Book Dealers in Theology and Religion: U.S."; "Preaching Units from Ephesians"; and "Course of Sermons from the Life of Christ." Also helpful are the lists of various supplementary materials.

"The pastor has to preach well and often," says the author. But how can he consistently do both? Here, Dr. Joe H. Cothen explains how the pastor can manage his myriad of duties (which range from visiting the sick members of his congregation to overseeing the construction of new church buildings) and still find the time to preach well.

In addition to balancing his hectic schedule, the pastor must be able not only to preach to the congregation but to reach them. If his sermons become predictable, monotonous, or boring, then his congregation will lose interest and not benefit from his preaching.

To capture and hold the attention of the congregation, the author offers numerous helpful techniques, including making the usual unusual. By utilizing this technique, the preacher may portray Moses as "the man with a stick." Doing so, he forces the members of his congregation to see Moses, and indeed, the acts of God, in a totally new perspective.

Megan Rothrock is a former set designer for the LEGO Group whose models have been displayed at ComicCon and at LEGO events across Europe. Rothrock enjoys meeting builders at LEGO fan events and hopes that her book will inspire the LEGO builders of tomorrow. Originally from California, she currently lives in Denmark where she works as a freelance toy designer.

Great book. Don't forget to get Vol 1.

Bought for a 6-7 year old.

This is a fantastic book for expanding your child's creativity with Lego's. The schematics in these books are not the same as you may find in the the lego boxes. The usual pages that call out for 3 of this and 4 of that are not there and steps sometimes take larger leaps. Don't worry though, the illustrations of the assemblies are very easy to read and this book is well worth the money.

The reading isn't so much required which allows the younger readers to really get into flipping through the pages. The LEGO official books tend to be a bit more wordy with less step by step pictorals. I would highly recommend this book over any of those. It doubles as a great living room table book with tons of interesting pictures to look at.

NOTE: If you've got a bin full of unsorted lego though you may want to do a little organizing before you give your child this book, otherwise going to be a lot of plastic on plastic noise.

I liked this one even more than the first volume

The LEGO Adventure Book, Volume 2 includes a series of about 40 step-by-step building guides that are similar to what is provided when you buy a LEGO kit and pictures of many more built models for further inspiration. What I said about the first book in the series also applies here, so I'll start off by quoting myself:

"The illustrations in this book are stellar and the models are outstanding. Anyone looking to be inspired to build more interesting and more beautiful things will find this book thrilling. The book follows a loose story line focused on an adventure, a quest to learn how to build interesting and complicated things with LEGO. The story line is neither vital nor distracting, it just gives an fun excuse to move from idea to idea. This is [another] book that I expect my kids to enjoy most (ages 8, 10, and 11)."

If you liked the first volume, you will like this one. Along with the abundance of new ideas and building guides, there are some subtle refinements to the presentation that make this sequel even more enjoyable than the first volume. For one, there is a new focus on imagination with a limited palette, such as when a builder has only a few LEGO parts to work with rather than a limitless supply. This is a nice touch as it helps with a positive "I can do it" attitude rather than the common sales tactic that starts by building a sad "I don't have the parts they have" feeling in the builder. To be sure, there are plenty of LEGO pieces in the examples that the reader may not already have, but they are not to focus; the focus is being creative and inspiring the reader. I like that.

The examples and projects are fun, diverse, colorful, and just all-around cool. In addition to the step-by-step instructions for specific projects, like Havoc: A Viper Fighter, where the reader learns how to build one form of space fighter, there are also follow-up pages that break the idea down to the important bits like "A LEGO Viper should have..." and a list. Then, there are lots of pictures of variations on this theme that use the same basic set of foundational parts to create a wide set of options and variations. This builds on the theme I mentioned above of avoiding the marketing evil of creating discontent and instead using simple basic things to get builders started and then building creativity.

The book contains large projects and small ones. There are space-based builds, earth-based, fantastic and realistic, futuristic and nods to the past. You will build cars, boats, planes, spaceships, homes, businesses, furniture, island getaways, castles, gardens, movie sets, kitchens, and some things I don't even have words to describe or categories to name. The variety is great.

I have reviewed a lot of LEGO books this year. This is one of my favorites. It just came out, the copyright date says "2014", but I'm pretty sure I've seen this at the local bookstore and it is available here. It is worth a look if you have a LEGO builder on your shopping list.

Lots of great ideas. fun book for LEGO lovers.

I bought this for my LEGO-crazy kids (4,4&2). They eagerly poured over the pages and picked different projects to build. There are all skill levels of projects and ideas to choose from.
