Good Collection of Poe Works

This is a collection of some works by Edgar Allen Poe. The book includes: The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Purloined Letter, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, The Pit and the Pendulum, A Tale of the Ragged Mountains, A descent into the Maelstrom, The Black Cat, "Thou Art the Man," and Matzengerstein. It has been some years since I read the book, but I do remember enjoying it.

one of the best mystery books of all time

Edgar Allan poe can write mysteries like no other writer. I love mystery books but this one no other writer can compare to. Each mystery has a porpose, a meaning and a moral. Another great thing about the book was the wide time scale that the mysteries were placed on, in-fact one of them happend in the stone age and another in the 1920's. Over all it was an ecellant book and I would definatley recomend it to any mystery lover.

Expands on general story but not much else

They expanded A LOT on the general canon of the universe (goes into detail how the universe is the way it is in the movie) but it is extremely lacking in expanding on character biographies and pasts. It's also disappointing that this book is so short; for a project that Disney had in development for many years, they could have greatly expanded on this book; I know they have they information!

In closing, If you are a die hard fan of Treasure Planet, this book is a must and is a holy grail in the fandom. The pictures they do have are gorgeous and they do explain Jim's mindset pretty well (but it's not something a die hard fan wouldn't already know) and it's nice to have a piece of Treasure Planet.

If you are a general fan, of animation or Disney then steer clear! Animation fans will find the lack of explanation on the blending of the 2d and 3d mediums disheartening and Disney fans tend to forget this movie exists so I doubt you'll care much for this.

AN UNDERRATED MOVIE, AN UNSUNG CLASSIC

I bought this book because I wanted to see some of the artwork that was part of a movie that my teacher from Art Center worked on. Yes, I must confess, I have never seen the movie, but bought it because I love collecting books on art and animation.

I have to agree with a previous review that pointed out that this book should have come out in hardcover format. It is too bad that Disney ignored it, and cut out on advertising, because the artwork is truly a treat. Nonetheless, I'm glad to include this book in my collection; it's more than worth its retail price!

Nice book, could use more art.

Strange to headline it that way, but even though it's an art book, it's still too brief. If anything, it needs to be a larger format with more of the concept paintings and development of the ship models as well. I do like the movie and wished it had been a bit longer too.

Kaffertjie - a love story

This is a difficult book to review as it left me with mixed feelings. The story setting is South Africa in 1986 and describes the life of various families living under apartheid laws. On the one side is Paul's family. Paul is a political leader in a party which is against the scrapping of apartheid laws. Paul's wife is childless. On the other side there is their African maid who is committed to a mental institution - and pregnant. The maid's husband is a complete drunk, totally inadequate to raise their newborn baby.

When Paul's wife brings this newborn African child into her home - in defiance of the "Group Areas Act" law in apartheid South Africa - tongues start wagging. It's not long before Paul's political party gets to hear of it. But the political party is not the only hurdle they will face in their endeavour to raise this African child.....

Although the story begins during an uncertain time in South African politics, it continues through beyond the scrapping of apartheid laws and the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.

The book will leave you wondering at the stupidity of the South African politics of the time, and rejoicing when the apartheid laws are scrapped. It's a heart-warming story of victory in adversity, love (for a child) against the odds.

The book is an English translation of the Afrikaans original, and as such, suffers a little in translation. Someone without a working knowledge of Afrikaans might find some sentence nuances difficult to understand.

If terms like Witwatersrand, Rand Easter Show, Roodepoort, Radio Highveld, Ouma, kraal and veld are close to your heart, then you will enjoy this book.

Recommended for South Africans.

I loved this book. It is written with sensitivity and a wonderful insight into South Africa's past. It shows that everyone has love in their hearts and this same love can cross cultural chasms when we let go of preconceived judgemental attitudes. The title is eponymous, and is meant to capture the contradictions in this story of love, devotion and (fortunately brief) betrayal across the chasms of racial ignorance and stupidity. The book is already making waves in its Afrikaans appearance. Now is the time to write honest stories about Apartheid. So many books from this era are filled with self-pity, but this book doesn't have a trace of it. It is written with so much insight that it takes you right back to that time, as well as taking you back to connecting with your own heart."

A manifesto against nihilsm and wake up call for the brain.

Let it be known that For The New Intellectual is a book dense with psychological insights and eye opening rational objectivism. This reader was awed by Ayn Rand's crisp writing, and cutting wit. Liberals will be immediately offended, but for those without philosophical bias, Rand is difficult to dismiss.
The book includes the essay, "For the New Intellectual" as well as excerpts from We the Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead, and many speaches from Atlas Shrugged. The beginning essay is more than worth the price of admission, while the excerpts gave this first time Rand reader a good sense of where to turn next.
Ayn Rand's philosophy is truly life affirming and hard with truth. Truth hurts sometimes, and Rand is not easy answers for idle minds. Rather, her philosophy dares to look starkly at where man's moral code has come and where it has led us. Ayn Rand seperates herself from all other thinkers that I've experienced because of her perspective as a 20th Century American. While many of her ideas find their root in Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy, she stands alone-- offering a positive solution for mankind. She absolutely asserts that man is the end in himself, and that his happiness on earth is his proper goal.
For the New Intellectual is both a slap in the face and fire in one's pants. Some will answer Ayn Rand's call for a new moral code and meaning to life, and as she says of the others, "leave them to heaven."

A great new perspective of dominant ideologies

The first half of For the New Intellectual is a detailed non-fiction essay explaining past and current ideologies in terms of "mystics of muscle", aka "Attilas", and "mystics of the mind", aka "witch doctors". These basically translate into those who want to control what people *do* such as dictators, and those who want to control what people *believe* such as religious leaders. The essay goes into detail explaining their dependency on both each other and their victims. Perhaps most importantly it explains how not to be a victim.
The second half of the book illustrates many of the principles described in the first half through excerpts from Ayn Rand's fictional works We The Living, Anthem, The Fountainhead, and Atlas Shrugged. WARNING: There are plot spoilers in the excerpts.

Maybe you are disgusted by the fact...

After I had read For the the Intellectual, I found myself craving to find more knowledge of her philosophy, I saw in a winderfully flowing style the actual points of Ayn Rand's philosophy. Unlike many of those who read this book(probably only the portions they needed to convince themselves of this Author's psychosis) and posted their reviews, I was not revolted by these words. I have seen these things around me all my life, and if Ayn Rand had not published her philosophy, I surely would have published something very similar eventually. It seems to me that the people who are turned away by this book are the people that take the most benefit from the current moral scheme. The people who are the fanatic crazy types about this philosophy are the one's who have been drained of their entire essence and wish to unlock their inner capabilities. If you wish to simply be able to live fully, fully for yourself, and wish to use YOUR potential to the fullest extent, then I suggest you read this stunning piece of work. And please take not that it is philosophy, and not an exact account of history

About the Author
I’m a very tall small town Vermont kid who spent decades doing training and professional services work that mostly focused on making sure computers could keep up with constantly changing user demands and expectations. Many of those years were spent doing performance work on very high visibility customer systems where one mistake would have put that company in the news in a very unfortunate way. I have written and delivered many technical courses. All of them were clear, concise, and useful. I’ve been a featured speaker at numerous conventions. I’m married to my college sweetheart and enjoying a semi-retired life in Vermont where, one day a week, it is my great pleasure to give the tour at Ben & Jerry’s with some of the finest people with whom I’ve ever worked. How sweet is that?

Great technical book with a healthy dose of "human" element

This book is great for any one in the field of Performance and Capacity. The book itself is a quick read (finished it on the plane ride from Chicago to Dallas), but the content is very rich and comprehensive. Bob's focused on practical application with elements of psychology and common sense, instead of just pure mathematical formulas and theories. I especially liked Bob's Performance Rules (summarized in the final section). Highly recommended!

A Darn Fine Book

This informative and practical book is the best one I've come across on the subject of Computer Performance. It is not dense on math, and it isn't a book that will become obsolete in six months. If I were starting in this field, or teaching an introductory course on Computer Performance, I'd find this book to be most useful.

If you deal with computer performance issues read this book

First, I know Bob, I bought the book because I know Bob. That said, I would recommend this book even if you don't know Bob. The book is hardware/OS/application neutral, is doesn't describe any specific meters. Instead it describes a philosophy, or at least a thought process. He distills performance tools into 4 broad categories, performance monitoring, capacity planning, load testing and modeling. He tells you how to think about and use these tools. He also talks about the politics of performance how to deal with people who have turf to protect, face to save or no money to spend. He talks about presenting your data, what to do, what not to do and warns you to prepare a 5 minute condensed version just in case your 1 hour with the CIO is rescheduled. He does all this in an almost casual manner with no big words and no higher math (if you can figure out the x in 5x + 7 = 27, your covered). You will still need to understand the meters that your hardware/OS/application provide but after reading this book you will have a much better idea of what to do with them.
