to understand the country, understand the personality cult

Many books exist in the English language on North Korea and the Kim dynasty. The thing to understand, however, is how Kim Il Sung did the things he REALLY did, because this is the baseline for why the country is the way it is. Written when he was still alive (1988), this book seeks to tear down myths of Kim Il Sung's infallibility (from the Northern view) and completely fictionalized back story (from some Southern views).

In some regards this is a dry affair, being highly historical and focused on getting names, dates, and events as closely aligned to factual history as possible. But seeing how history unfolded and was revised continuously in efforts to change his image in the public eye is worth any dryness you have to endure.

Enlightening and fascinating, if you want to know North Korea, this is the one and only place to start.

Good for explainig North KOrea and understanding it.

This is essential for understanding North Korea and how it relates to the world of today. To undestand North Korea you must understand it's founder Kim Il Sung. The book goes on to show how he created a Stalinist State and huge army to insure it's survival. It talks about the many attempts on the lives of south korean presidents and his unpredictable nature that he passed on to his son and successor. Understandin Kin Il Sung will help the reader understand why Noth Korea is today run more like a cult than a country and why it is the most secretive country in the world today and a failed society.

About the Author

Jennifer Niederst Robbins was one of the first designers for the Web. As the designer of O'Reilly's Global Network Navigator (GNN), the first commercial web site, she has been designing for the Web since 1993. She is the author of the bestselling "Web Design in a Nutshell" (O'Reilly), and has taught web design at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and Johnson and Wales University in Providence. She has spoken at major design and Internet events including SXSW Interactive, Seybold Seminars, the GRAFILL conference (Geilo, Norway), and one of the first W3C International Expos.

Great Textbook & Reference

Oh, I love this book. If you're shopping for a beginning web design book, get this one first. You'll end up using it until it's dog-eared, and waiting eagerly for a new edition in a few years!

I teach introductory Web Page Design to design students at Madison College in Madison, WI. This is the textbook I require my students to buy.

Learning Web Design has a friendly style and great explanations of what web pages are, how they work and how to make them. It drills deeply into HTML, CSS and web images. And it touches on javascript and other topics you'll need to know if you continue to work in web design/development.

More important to me and my very visual students, the book is well designed (a rarity in books about web design/development). The page layout and images used make the book's information easier to understand and make the book fun to sit down and read.

Learning Web Design is a great tool for my students, and I'm sure it serves them as a great reference as they enter their careers.

It tells you not only how to do stuff, it tells you why and when it is right to do so

The book tells you not only how to do stuff, it tells you why and when it is right to do so. Proportionally speaking, if the book were 11 pages, you get 1 page for introduction, 3 for HTML, 5 for CSS and 2 for javascript. The book focuses on the important stuff, and says what is good on each. You can always learn the material online via web search, copying examples, etc, but it will take a while to grasp the 'why' of its intended usage.

If you already know some of the material and want a refresher on the latest (such as HTML5), simply go to the 'test yourself' section at the end of each chapter. The core of the book is the HTML and CSS content. It nicely explains what it's new in HTML5.

HTML5: the book tells you what to do for browsers that do not support HTML5. It is to the point in just what you need to know. It includes enough for the video tag but not too much. If you need to go deep into canvas tag, get another book.

CSS: the book gives you strategies for page layout, and covers nice stuff such as round corners, transitions, transformations, animations. Finally I was able to fully understand a number of CSS techniques that I have used in my sites.

JavaScript: the book covers enough to practically know what it is and why you may have to learn it in the future. If you need to go deep in JavaScript, get another book. Lastly, a small chapter on web graphics is what I consider 'filler' content for people that know nothing about image formats.

The book is big and pretty, in the same way that you can learn genetics online, we all know that the best is to get a genetics book and read through it. Similarly here, you wont regret getting the hard-copy, it is similar to a traditional college book (definitely less pricey than a genetics book). The reader can be a newbie or skilled person in web page design. Newbie will learn in a 'clean' way, the skilled person will refresh/learn how to correctly use HTML5 tags and CSS.

Learning Web Design? This is the only book you'll need!

Trying to learn how to write a Web site from scratch? If you're just looking around online for how to do it, good luck! It's not as simple as it might seem to learn about HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

That's where Jennifer Niederst Robbins's book, Learning Web Design: A Beginner's Guide to HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Web Graphics comes in. A lot of resources that purport to explain the beginnings of anything either involve dry lists of features (in the case of HTML most involve listing and explaining tags one by one). This book does something no other book has, at least not that I've found: it tells you at the beginning what you need to learn and what hardware and software you need. If you've never written any HTML before, these kinds of things are completely indispensable, and yet somehow you'll have to scour dozens of sometimes completely contradictory Web sites to find the same information. After searching for quite some time, you'll often find online something you think is an answer, only to discover that the page you're reading has been up and has remained un-updated since the late 1990's. With this excellently written volume, you can see that it's been written in 2012 and know that it's (at least as of this review) completely up to date, and everything is here in this one book.

I picked the book up primarily to come up to speed on modern HTML, since I often take the Wordpress route of Web design, and it had been quite a while since I wrote a bunch of HTML from scratch. I had a weekend to build a Web site from nothing, and I found pretty much everything I needed, right here.

Jennifer Niederst Robbins has done a great job of explaining the anatomy, theory, and best practices of Web Design, so that coming from knowing nothing at all on the subject, you should by the end not only be able to create your own site, but also be able to do it the right way, with well marked-up HTML and sensible, at least reasonably search engine-optimized structure. I've reviewed quite a few other books on this subject, and it's rare that everything comes together as well as it does here. As a beginner, you'll love this book; you'll be taken through, step by step, in aspects of HTML5, CSS, and Javascript in sections that build in complexity. Robbins doesn't dumb anything down-- she simply build slowly on simpler subjects, but always explains things accurately and understandably.

If you're familiar with the basics of Web design, like me, you'll also find a lot of help here. I learned HTML, CSS, and Javascript in scraps over the years, almost always lacking a fundamental understanding of why I was doing something the way I did; let's face it, if you're like me, you did a search for what you needed to do, found a snippet of code somewhere, and copied and pasted it. Now you can finally find out why something is the way it is and do it the right way. I was relieved that I could scan the table of contents to find the subject I needed, skip past the bits I didn't need at the moment, and read an accurate and succinct explanation of the topic I was interested in.

Typically this is the point where I would find some tiny thing that maybe fell flat or that I didn't care for, or that could have been done more to my liking. Well, not this time. This book would be an excellent resource for both beginners and intermediate folks. If you're looking for an advanced guide to HTML, or something more in-depth about Javascript, you probably want to choose a book that doesn't have 'Beginner' in the title, right?

History really works

This book was written shortly before the collapse of the USSR. So a narrow criticism could bash it for not forecasting such a big event. However, history is not forecasting, and this is a very good history book. Cohen refuses to fall into the Western bias trap, and therefore feeds the reader with valuable insight rarely ever found in Western books about the East. For example, Cohen insists on the strong link between conservative public opinions and the former USSR's government policies, as opposed to the formulaic view of a Soviet state in harsh opposition to its own people: this kind of insight does more to help understanding post-communist Russia's political developments than most tired Western litanies about Russia.

Great Food for Thought

Paulo Coelho can do no wrong in my book. This collection of thoughts from his books and other writings summarizes his beliefs on life, love, destiny etc. It provides the reader with food for thought and reminds us of the things we know about life somewhere in the back of our heads but tend to forget we know as life happens.
If you're not careful you can read this entire book in less than an hour, but if you do you'd have missed the point. I read, reflect and where appropriate, I write.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Simple wisdom

This is a superb collection of quotes from various Paulo Coelho's books that draws upon his wisdom. The book is broken down into sections that explore a theme for inspirational reading. This is the perfect companion for quite moments or those noisy moments because it brings peace of mind. This book is like a brain springboard, a cerebral trampoline, if you will, where the mind expands into mental gymnastics based on the simple treasures provided by the words of Mr.Coehlo. This is something everyone should read,it has something for everyone and something that most people will enjoy. This is a great gift book because it is so easy to read and enjoyable.

This book has positive themes on life. For instance, dreams
nourish the soul. As such, the good fight is done in affirming
the authenticity of our dreams. The author asks that we
open our hearts to follow dreams to their ultimate fruition.
The author asks that we choose one path rather than scattering
our efforts over the many.

This in itself is good advice. The pilgrimage itself teaches
the best way to actualize our dreams. From a practical standpoint,
human beings search for dreams but toil to achieve them. Virtue is similar to courage for those who seek the spiritual path.
Our energy and knowledge are attributed to G-d.

The book is an excellent rendition for relating the spiritual realm
to the practical world we live in.

The best but with 1 problem

I'm abig fan of TOM GATES I've all the books (this one too but in the kindel book) I love them (the books) but wen I downloaded & payed I started to read and all the words were like this : hellomynameistomgatesandmybest...
it was very hard to read

Tom gates is awesome

I liked this book because I think that L.Pichon was really creative with the way she wrote it. Like how she has put lots of doodles through the book.that's why I liked this book.

For my first book unleashed onto the unsuspecting world, I had to write the in-depth version of one of the best tales I've ever come across. �I was inspired by my older sister's POV video series better known to her fans as the "Overdeveloped Stepson" series. �Writing this almost insane scenario brings serious humor to explicit writing, and what's sex without the funny bits? �I hope you enjoy venturing into the mind of this unaware, loving stepmother, her antics, aloofness, and uncanny ability to drive her stepson absolutely to the brink, as much as I loved "being" her in order to write her very own story.

Wow! Realistic Erotic Fiction with a subtle sense of humor

This is the second book I've read by this author, and again she has completely nailed the subtleties of realistic erotic fiction.
There is an element of tongue in cheek humor that I've never seen so well written in erotica before.

I guarantee this book will turn you on, and probably make you smile too - how rare is that?

Definitely worth the price, I hope she writes more in this style - very original!

Overdeveloped stepsons and entertainment centers

A stepmother must deal with a young man's rather convenient medical "problem". Gotta tread carefully with the description here, but let's just say the kid has physical dimensions approximating a horse, and perhaps gobbles a bottle of vitamin E per day with a dozen oysters, washing that down with Spanish Fly. Ms. Tirrell doesn't waste time with extraneous details ... though perhaps the real problem is that her (not really) ingenuous stepmother cleans the house in short skirts and high heels and admits in the narration that her bosom is "not designed for housework". The young man's natural "reaction" frightens the lady; she takes him to the doctor. Diagnosis: he's "overdeveloped". Somehow, a solution is found. Meanwhile, I enjoyed the complaint about the absent husband's "god-awful, giant entertainment center taking up half the room". I share Ms. Tirrell's contempt for overpriced and unnecessary electronics encased in pasteboard furniture.

Relief Available

Nice story about a mother's love for her over developed son who needs (under doctor's orders) to be relieved. This theme is not new, so I give it four stars. Tina's writing is excellent however and I look forward to more of her work.
