A gem

I first encountered this wonderful little book during my second year of Internal Medicine residency. It was introduced to me by an intern I was "supervising" who carried it everywhere. She was the sharpest doctor I had encountered at that time (and one of the best since) and ran rings around most of her attendings. The book was apparently a must read at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York where she was educated. I purchased it and have never regretted it or been without a copy since 1987. Dr. Friedman, a NY-trained cardiologist and author of several cardiology books edited it and continued to do so until his retirement earlier this decade. What can I say other than "BUY IT!"?
I carried it during every ER shift and walk-in clinic that I worked throughout the 1990s. The wonderful thing about it is that it proceeds from basic symptoms down to final diagnosis and is useful to trainee and expert. Clearly and authoritatively written with a no-nonsense brass tacks approach that is rare in internal medicine. Too bad Little Brown no longer publishes it in the spiral edition. If you can pick up the 1995 edition I would do so. The spiral is much more durable than the current version from its new publisher which appears to be more expensive and fragile.(I recently purchased the new one as a gift to a colleague who is studying for recertification in IM). I do not believe there is much difference between the titles other than price and and a poorly designed cardboard jacket on the new version. I own 2 of the spirals, one for work and one for home.

Your patients will benefit greatly from this title and so will you!

I love this book!! Truly one of my favorites! Short chapters in a devotional format. High impact questions at the end of each chapter for reflection. Wonderful for daily quiet times. Ernesto Estrada, Professor and Chair in Complexity Science, University of Strathclyde, UK,Philip Knight, Lecturer in Mathematics, University of Strathclyde, UK

Ernesto Estrada is a Professor in Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde, UK. He is the Chair in Complexity Science since 2008 and the 1964 Chair in Mathematics since 2014. He holds the Wolfson Research Merit Award from the Royal Society and has published more than 160 papers and 10 book chapters. He is the author of The Structure of Complex Networks: Theory and Applications, published by Oxford University Press (OUP) in 2011. Professor Estrada is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Complex Networks published by OUP. His research interests are in the mathematical analysis of networks, the use of physical analogies to study networks and applications of network theory to society, chemistry, biology, ecology and engineering.

Philip Knight is a Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Strathclyde, UK. He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the University of Manchester in 1993 and has spent most of his career carrying out research into matrix algebra. His interest in applications drew him inexorably towards network theory and his research interests now centre on the algebraic structure of networks as well as on the use of networks to represent other mathematical structures. More recently, Dr Knight has been involved in teaching courses on network theory in different countries and is well regarded among students for his expository abilities.

Great visual introduction to key philosophical problems

Depending on who’s behind them, non-fiction comics can be fascinating and educational, or didactic and boring. Thankfully, The Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy falls firmly into the first category. I attribute that to the crediting of Kevin Cannon as both artist and co-writer. It’s clear that a visual presentation of the material has been kept in mind throughout. The other co-writer, Michael F. Patton, brings the subject matter, since he’s a philosophy professor.

As demonstrated by the cover, the metaphor throughout the book is a journey down the river of philosophy. That allows for various imaginative, entertaining images (as well as the occasional talking fish, commenting archly). Although the text primarily drives the book, there are plenty of strong visuals to enhance, emphasize, and expand on the words.

Our narrator is Heraclitus, one of the pre-Socratic philosophers, given a friendly face and active demeanor by Cannon. He explains early on that philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom, and to investigate that, we’re going to find out what other philosophers thought through history. He’s a great choice for the imagery, since he’s the one that first said, “It is not possible to step twice into the same river.”

In addition to the historical framework, the book is arranged around a collection of the most famous problems tackled by the field over the years:
* logic — looking at what makes an argument successful, and watching Aristotle climb a mountain through a chain of true premises
* perception — examining how we know what we believe, and meeting Descartes and his skepticism in a prison metaphor
* minds — Plato guides us in exploring mind/body dualism, and a tiny Leibniz explores the brain and drives Descartes in one of the most creative sections in the book
* free will — determinism on a yacht trip
* God — exploring religion with logic
* and ethics — what choices we should make about how to live

I appreciated the way that it was acknowledged early on that the canon, the best-known philosophers, makes for a “testosterone-heavy line-up”. As we meet a new philosopher, there’s a half-page biographical sketch with life dates, a representative quote, a summary of his importance, his location, his most famous work, and a fun fact. An Exuberant Canoe Ride Down the River of Western Thought

Why is an introduction to philosophy important? Simply enough it is an introduction to thinking logically about what you as an individual actually believe when it comes to topics such as God, free will, ethics and even your own mind. Michael Patton and Kevin Cannon's Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy covers each of these topics, including a chapter on logic itself, by dipping the adventurous reader's toes into the works of some of Western Civilization's premier thinkers. All of this is achieved through a light-hearted canoe ride down the river of knowledge with Heraclitus doing double duty as guide and paddler. Along the way he gives the reader the broad-strokes of Western thought by enlisting the help of lively animated renditions of personalities such as Kant, Plato, Hume, Spinoza, Locke - even Nietzsche can be found skulking about like a goth kid. In no way a chronological account of the discipline, Patton does one better by showcasing the back-and-forth conversational nature between the texts and ideas that continually shaped art, governments, laws, sciences and mathematics over the past give-or-take 3000 years. I imagine this book would make for a fun, accessible text for the many virgin thinkers bumbling their way into their first freshman philosophy course. And as Heraclitus points out in the introduction to the book, philosophers depend heavily on metaphors and hypothetical scenarios to explain their reasoning, so bringing the field of study to a visual medium feels axiomatic. Even though much of the subject matter was familiar to me, the crisp artwork and humorous dialogues between the philosophers made for an entertaining and intellectually meaty read. Very well done.

Informative Book, Lively, Masterfully Rendered

This was a highly informative and humorous book. Aside from capsulizing the major figures in philosophy, the book has continuity as a story. I found the lighting of scenes excellent as well, masterfully rendered. I've been a fan of Kevin Cannon's work for over a decade now and it's great to see his continued progress as an illustrator.

Realistic Journey of the Lesbian World

While scrolling through my Tumblr account I came across a movie preview of this title. The movie seemed interesting so I decided to read the book first and now I can't wait to see the movie. This book kept me interested in what was going to evolve with the characters. I managed to finish it in 3-4 nights of reading. This book takes you through a realistic journey of lives of lesbian woman. When you read the book you are going to most likely be able to relate to one of the characters and or their situation. I'm glad that the author ended it with a happy ending that you are hoping for and you read. I look forward to reading more from this author.

I did not know girls did that

My friend recommended this book and while I wasn't sure of what to expect,I definitely did not expect the characters and story to be do...relatable. I identified with their relationships, and empathized with the frustrating confusion that love can bring. I was so caught up in the stories as they unfolded that I don't know when it changed from a lesbian romance to just a romance. At the end I was disappointed because I wanted to know more about what happened to the characters, there were still explanations and stories to be told, then I realized this is the first of a trilogy - wily author :) Can't wait for the rest!

Marine Corps Veteran and Former Law Enforcement Officer remembers his childhood. We immigrated to the United States from Colombia when I was only 4 years old, life as an immigrant proved to be extremely dificult, which hurled my father into a dangerous life. I eventually became a U.S. Citizen, joined the United States Marine Corps, and served 5 years Active Duty. After earning an Honorable Discharge I then became a Law Enforcement Officer, also serving 3 years in the Army Reserves. After living these extraordinary experiences I decided to write a book about my family first through my father's eyes. I now currently live in Florida with my wife and son while I work to become a well known Author and write my next book.

Takes you on a ride and you can't let go.

It's a short read, but it definitely gives us good insight on the challenges of being an immigrant and living the American Dream. It's turn after turn and basically everything that could go wrong goes wrong. Nonetheless, it's still an incredible life.

Great Story!!!

Once I began reading it, I didn't wanna put it down. It was an easy read, not complicated to understand, and very interesting. There were some areas that could've used more detail maybe or further in depth narration but all in all it was a cool story. I would recommend it to those second & third generation immigrants that take this country for granted and don't know what their parents or grandparents had to do to get them here. I also recommend it to Americans that have no idea what some immigrants go through or why they choose to sacrifice so much to come here to the US.

Can't miss, great read!!

This was an excellent book. I would recommend it to anyone. It takes you for a ride that doesn't end until the last page. It helps shine a light on how each choice one person makes can have such a profound effect on many lives. The imagery is beautiful.
