This study sets out to investigate humour in the English translation of the Argentinean comic Mafalda and how the strategy of compensation is employed to make up for the loss of the comic effect that may occur during the process of translating. Humour is discussed in relation to pragmatics, politeness, semiotics and intertextuality. Similarly, the concepts of equivalence in translation in general and dynamic equivalence in particular are dealt with in order to introduce the strategy of compensation, which emerges to cope with the lack of equivalence in translation. The analysis includes 17 comic strips from the comic Mafalda, approached from two different perspectives: (1) from the perspective of general theories related to humour and (2) in relation to the type of compensation applied in the translation of the comic strips into English. The study will follow the taxonomy of compensation techniques established by Hervey, Higgins and Haywood (1995), who identify four types of compensation including (1) in kind, (2) in place, (3) by merging and (4) by splitting. The study shows that the use of the technique of compensation is crucial in the translation of the selected comic strips.

—Nicola Yoon, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Everything, Everything

To make things worse, the only person who truly understands his heartache is Jackson. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffin’s downward spiral continues. From School Library Journal
Gr 10 Up—No one understands what Griffin is going through after Theo, his ex and the love of his life, dies. No one, perhaps, except Theo's new boyfriend, Jackson. In a narrative that alternates between past and present, Silvera offers a gem of a story about first love and great loss. Griffin's voice is strong and affecting, and as readers come to know Theo's history and the depth of Griffin's love, the loss becomes more and more poignant. Griffin has obsessive-compulsive disorder, and while his illness is a sensitively portrayed and central part of his life, it is not the defining theme of the novel: his grief and loss are the focus. Griffin's transformation as he moves from resentment and rage at Jackson to compassion and connection is profound to witness. But perhaps most memorable is the protagonist's slow, dawning realization of Theo's deep imperfections. It is so easy to idolize a first love, and even easier to idolize someone who has died. Griffin's gradual awareness of Theo's flaws is the true heart of this standout title. VERDICT With a cast of beautifully realized characters, a powerful narrative voice, and genuine portrayals of complex teen situations, this work is a must-have.—L. Lee Butler, Hart Middle School, Washington, DC

—The Horn Book Magazine

"Silvera finds a depth in Griffin’s story that is remarkable . . . One of the best young authors dealing with issues like sexuality, depression, mental health, and the complex and often confusing relationship rules of Millennials and younger generations. He may be categorized as YA, but Silvera is a writer well worth reading no matter your age."
—About.com

"Grief is strong and realistically portrayed in this tale of relationships and love."
—School Library Connection

“Silvera’s singularly authentic voice is back in force in his second novel. Like The Fault in Our Stars, here is a book that explores grief and vulnerability with honesty, without talking down to the reader. The nuanced, complex characters nearly walk off the page, and the compulsively readable story and artfully chosen details make this a book worth getting lost in!”
—Shay McClean, Children’s Buyer at Third Street Books

“In this authentic and charged sophomore novel, Silvera presents a narrator whose grief is nearly tangible. As Griffin revisits his path with Theo—best friend, ex-boyfriend, and love of his life—he discovers that their history is much more than a neat and tidy linear
line. Once again, Silvera gifts readers with an emotional wrecking ball of a novel, leaving them stronger for the experience.”

History is All You Left Me Will Leave You Utterly Wrecked…But In a Good Way
By YAandWine
I am a huge fan of YA contemporaries that make me feel something, and Adam Silvera certainly never lets me down in that department. His latest novel, History is All You Left Me, (out January 17th!) is no exception.

My Review: FIVE STARS
It’s obvious just from reading the description that this book is going to be a tearjerker. What I didn’t expect though, was the intense rollercoaster of other emotions that I experienced while reading it. Suffice it to say, this book will give you ALL THE FEELS and then some.

Silvera vacillates brilliantly between Griffin’s grief-stricken journey after his ex-boyfriend Theo dies and the history of their past together. You get to fall in love right along side them, you’ll laugh through all their silly moments, and you will MOST DEFINITELY cry. Theo’s death will of course bring you to tears, but there are other moments in this story that pack just as big of an emotional punch. Keep those tissues close!

This book is brilliantly plotted and an absolute joy to read. This is definitely my new favorite YA contemporary, and I wish everyone in the world could be required to read it. We’d all be better people for it.

Cover Rating : THREE STARS
While I love the way this cover reflects the contrast in both the past and present perspectives in this story as well as the inverse emotions that Griffin feels at different points in the plot, it’s just not the prettiest cover ever.

Swoon Worthiness: FIVE STARS
The guys in this story are just absolutely ADORABLE. I love all of them: Griffin, Theo, Jackson, and Wade. They are all such fantastic and REAL characters. They all have their flaws, but they’re flawed in ways they make them so much more relatable. Silvera has sprinkled just the BEST swoon worthy moments throughout this entire story, which definitely balances out the heavier emotional moments.

Why You Should Read This Book:
This book is BREATHTAKING. It includes great representation of both diversity and mental health issues, which is so, so, SO important for young readers and adults alike to experience.
Silvera has managed to not only deliver a story with an entertaining plot but also what could best be described as an emotional roundhouse to a reader’s gut. And I do mean that in the best way possible.
If you are looking for a book that will give you Every. Single. Feel. Ever…then this is most definitely a book you’ll want to put at the top of your 2017 TBR pile.

Adam Silvera blew me away!
By Ashley Elliott
Oh my gosh this book made me cry my eyes out. I loved it and I cried. So, it has a P.S. I Love You feel, more so the movie than the book. It is about a 17 year old boy named Griffin who is a senior year in high school who just lost his ex boyfriend and the love of his life. Theo was his first boyfriend and meant everything to Griffin, but they had broken up and Theo was living in California going to college and had even met someone new, Jackson, who is now the only person who really understands Griffin. The story is between the times with flashbacks to Griffin and Theo's relationship from the beginning to the end, with Griffin dealing with grief telling the story. I loved that Griffin wasn't perfect. He was actually very flawed in his OCD, emotional instability, and refusal to open up to anyone. I can't imagine what going through that kind of lose would cause but OCD is very real and so many people just use it as a punch line. This felt more real and I know from the author it is real. He has talked about dealing with these obsessions himself, and I have real empathy for that. I had a complaint with Silvera's last book that it crapped on LGBTQ+ people, I know in real life prejudice is a hard thing to deal with and I am not gay but I didn't like reading it. I don't know if I am allowed to have that opinion but whatever. This one though I loved so much because they got to have a good relationship without insane amount of hate. The parents cared and treated them good, the friends were accepting, I enjoyed not having to read pages of hating for LGBTQ+ people. This is an emotional story. It is about loss, like death loss and that isn't something easy to go through, ever. It was heartbreaking, and sometimes just plain hard to read. It is also one of the best books I have gotten to read though.

Oh Adam Silvera how come you like to break my heart so much
By J. Arkin
Oh Adam Silvera how come you like to break my heart so much?

Silvera is such an amazing storyteller and it shines through in this story. Yes, as mentioned above, this story is heartbreaking, but it’s also so beautifully hopeful by the time you get to that last page. His portrayal of grieving for a loved one makes this incredibly emotional and you can’t help but feel for Griffin and the things he’s trying to sort out in his head.

The story itself is told non-linearly and it’s done so, so well. The present pieces weave seamlessly into the past pieces and you will have feelings about everyone and everything as you turn the pages.

History Is All You Left Me is truly about so much more than dealing with loss though… it’s about coming to terms with your life not ultimately being what you thought it would be, losing your best friend, dealing with your inner demons and taking control of your life and Silvera explores these in such an incredible way.

I think what I loved most about this though, is that Adam’s characters are so real… like, no holds barred, you get the good, the bad, and the ugly and he doesn’t sugar coat much of anything. Griffin at times will frustrate you, and sadden you, but above all you’ll want good things for him and you’ll want him to figure out what he really needs, not what he thinks he needs. I’m going to be honest here and tell you that I had really strong feelings about both Theo and Jackson while I read this, and my heart broke repeatedly for what Griffin was forced to face.

Ugh – I feel like I’m selling this as a hugely depressing book, but it truly isn’t… Adam is amazing at finding the humor in things that you might not expect there to be any. He manages to yes, break your heart into pieces, but he also manages to piece you back together with laughter like no other.

If you’re looking for an amazing coming-of-age story with characters and a story that will resonate with you, then look no further. History Is All You Left Me will be shelved among my all-time favorite books and you definitely will want to grab this asap.

Simple instructions and examples
By thewritersjourney
What A Writer Needs does not contain any deep truths or startling revelations; it is at its core simply a book of fundamentals written as a reminder and an encouragement to creative writing teachers. Teachers can get into a rut in their instruction just as writers can feel trapped in their work, and author Ralph Fletcher does a fine job of helping both break out of the norm with solid examples from his own career and the writing of his students. There are no exercises for the reader to practice, simply instructions and examples to illustrate each chapter.

Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country: The Native American PerspectiveFrom University of Illinois Press

Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country broadens the scope of conventional study of the Lewis and Clark expedition to include Native American perspectives. Frederick E. Hoxie and Jay T. Nelson present the expedition’s long-term impact on the “Indian Country” and its residents through compelling interviews conducted with Native Americans over the past two centuries, secondary literature, Lewis and Clark travel journals, and other primary sources from the Newberry Library’s exhibit Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country. Rich stories of Native Americans, travelers, ranchers, Columbia River fur traders, teachers, and missionaries—often in conflict with each other--illustrate complex interactions between settlers and tribal people. Environmental protection issues and the preservation of Native language, education, and culture dominate late twentieth-century discussions, while early accounts document important Native American alliances with Lewis and Clark. In widening the reader’s interpretive lens to include many perspectives, this collection reaches beyond individual achievement to appreciate America’s plural past.

"Successfully places the famous expedition within the broader context of a continental struggle over sovereignty and cultural power. . . . A must read for scholars in Native American history, the history of the trans-Mississippi West, and ethnohistory. Essential."--Choice

"This collection of essays and documents is a unique, authentic, and fascinating source for the study of history and is recommended for academic libraries and Native American studies classes in colleges and universities."--Multicultural Review

"Hoxie and Nelson strive to step beyond the typically reverential fervor of bicentennial celebrations, including those of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. . . . The essays in this collection, then, represent an eclectic swath of topics and sources. . . . An excellent resource for both serious students and scholars of the American West."--Journal of Illinois History

Excellent... very worth the Readers' time

"Lewis & Clark and the Indian Country”: The Native American Perspective edited by Frederick E. Hoxie and Jay T. Nelson

Being a “perspective”, this work naturally includes insights to be contemplated and bias to be criticized. The insights in this book are ample, important, thought-provoking, and deserve plenty of contemplation. The bias is chiefly the age-old “White equals Bad, Red equals Noble” bigotry and hypocrisy that has characterized the writings of Indians and their allies forever. That is to say it is “old news” and should be set aside in order to glean the most from the insights.

I’m certain the reader will agree that the editors have done an admirable job of cutting through the mythology of the Lewis & Clark expedition. In doing so, they have brought the reader to a vantage point that puts the expedition and its’ impact into “3-D”, so to speak. It’s like they’ve “IMAX’ed” the Corps of Discovery and its’ place in the real America of 1803-06. But I don’t want to spoil the fun… except, perhaps, to say this…

The editors seem to have undergone an epiphany of sorts – a realization of the unseen impact Red/White contact then, and since and now. They seem to sense that, in spite of its’ twisted, twining path over the passed century, the Life of the native peoples is still in them. They are still Themselves. The 21st chapter, titled “Language Preservation” recognizes Language as the soul of a People (“culture”, if you will) and comes closest to articulating that epiphany. In fact, the reader might do well to read that chapter first and then go back and read the book through. And, in fact, White readers might do very well to ponder whether all American citizens need to achieve a similar epiphany about our lives too. Our national government is doing many of the same things to all of us that it did to indigenous Americans in the 1900s, especially with regards to our children.

Great book for those interested in Native American studies
By Richard
Great book for getting the other side of the story. Most literature referencing the Lewis and Clark expedition is from the perspective of colonialism. This book uncovers the Native American perspective.

This book is really disappointing. Actually it is not a book. It is just a collection of old emails. Trying to glean any usable information out of it is difficult. I must say that it would take a lot of nerve to ask this kind of money for a bunch of emails. There is a much better book available. Reviews:

"What a great story. I hope there is a sequel. Or not. I don't know how the author could top this one. It's all you could want in sci-fi and more."

"The interplay between the two lead characters, Angel and Charlotte, is great. I don't know if this is the start of a series or a standalone, but I'm hoping it's the former."

"Crime noir. Fugitive quest. Thelma and Louise. Treasure hunt. Terminator chase."

"Inquisitor is an awesome adventure, choc full of mysteries as the Inquisitor attempts to solve a series of murders, and finds herself drawn into the conspiracies and machinations of the decadent megacorporations, and enigmatic Genevolves. Awesome story, hope there will be more."

About the Author
When he was eleven, Mitchell Hogan was given The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy to read, and a love of fantasy novels was born. He spent the next ten years reading, rolling dice, and playing computer games, with some school and university thrown in. Along the way he accumulated numerous bookcases worth of fantasy and sci-fi novels, and he doesn t look to stop anytime soon. For a decade he put off his dream of writing, then he quit his job and wrote A Crucible of Souls, Book One in the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence. He now writes full-time and is eternally grateful to the readers who took a chance on an unknown self-published author. He lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife, Angela, and daughter, Isabelle.

A Light SciFi Alternative From a Fantastic Fantasy Author
By P. Roberts
I found Hogan because of the other series of books he writes. While waiting for him to release the next book in that series I decided to pick this up and give it a try.

This book doesn't have quite the same level of detail and development that his fantasy books do, but the pacing is a lot more action oriented. Don't get me wrong, the main characters aren't one dimensional, just not as developed as in his other books. This is mainly due to pacing. The book reads somewhat like a crime novel that develops into a fast paced action story. This makes it fun to read, and a bit lighter than his other works.

If you have enjoyed his other books so far, this is worth a read because it is still a quality book from a quality author.

If you haven't read anything else he has written, I would honestly suggest starting with his fantasy books if you want something meaty but starting with this if you want a bit more of a laid back read. You really can't go wrong either way.

A cracking tale filled with action, intrigue, and substance!
By Matthew Summers
Now I know what you are all thinking... Mitchell Hogan, author of the award winning Sorcery Ascendant Sequence, has released a science fiction book?!? Huh? Shouldn't he be working on book three?!? Wait a minute... are you serious???

Yep... I am serious... Mitchell Hogan has released a standalone science fiction book. And damn.. it is pretty awesome!

Now before I get into the nitty gritty of why I loved this book, I want to point out something.

I don't usually read a lot of science fiction.

Please don't burn me at the stake before I explain.

I don't usually read a lot of science fiction, but that doesn't mean that I don't love the genre (I do). I just find what I would call 'hard' science fiction incredibly tedious at times. As such, I am very selective about what I read. So when Inquisitor first appeared on my radar my initial thought was one of reluctance. I, like many of Mitch's fans, wondered why he wasn't busy working on the next book in his fantasy series (for the record, he was.) And then I read an early description of this book:

Inquisitor detectives.. a world filled with meddling corporations and genetically altered mutants... and artificial intelligence that could possible reveal the deepest and darkest secrets of humanity...

My next thought, after reading this, was: Sold! Take my money!

And damn, I am glad I made that decision.

Inquisitor is a fast paced and action packed tale that hooked its tendrils into me from the first page and steadfastly refused to let go. And wow, it is relentless.

From the opening scene, where Xia and her partner take on a Genevolve discard, through to the sprawling space battles and conflict towards the end, readers are taken on a roller coaster ride of action laced adventure and intrigue. This book punched me in my frontal lobe and continued to smash me over and over again with a story that became more absorbing the further I read.

I adored how Hogan structured this particular story. Inquisitor started as a crime novel, evolved into a spy and techno thriller, and finished as a space opera that posed philosophical questions like what does it means to be human?

And you know what... it worked magnificently.

Another thing that I really enjoyed about Inquisitor was how light it felt to read. It never once slowed down and became bogged by factual dumps or scientific explanation (one of the pitfalls of hard SF). This doesn't mean that it was shallow either. Quite the opposite in fact! Hogan has masterfully weaved an intricate tale of murder, espionage, and secrecy into this book whilst also exploring issues such as technological abuse and consciousness.

The world building in Inquisitor is also well done. It features a galaxy filled with cybernetics, space travel, interactive programs and different levels of artificial intelligence that are both fascinating and enthralling. Hogan offers enough description of this world to keep most fans of the genre happy. He does not go to great lengths to explain how something works, or why it exists (such as Xia's implants) in Inquisitor, it just does. This was enough to keep me involved and interested, and I enjoyed how he coupled this level of description with the frantic pace of the novel (not an easy feat).

The characters in Inquisitor are also brilliantly described and portrayed. One of Hogan's real strengths from his Sorcery Ascendant Sequence is his characterisation, and this is no different in Inquisitor. Angel Xia, the main protagonist, is an incredibly layered and fascinating character whose evolution provided the perfect foil to the often chaotic and childish program Charlotte-Rose. I adored how both of these characters grew over time, and how their agency changed as the story unfolded. Their relationship lies at the centre of Inquisitor, and it is handled wonderfully by Hogan amidst the often chaotic events occurring around them. I also loved the other characters in this book, from Xia's partner Victor through to Summer and the mysterious (and ominous) Genevolve's. In fact, I don't think any of the minor characters in Inquisitor were poorly depicted. All of them merely enhanced what was already an awesome story.

And the ending... powerful, evocative, and incredibly well written. I had to put my eReader down for awhile to just think after finishing this story.

All in all Inquisitor is a fast paced and explosive story filled with action and substance. It features a unique and fascinating world with powerful yet sympathetic characters that will grab a hold of you and refuse to let go. Fans of Hogan's previous work will love this book, as will most science fiction fans looking for a cracking and action packed story with body. Highly recommended and, for a few bucks on Amazon, it is an absolute steal!

You would be crazy not to buy it!

4 out of 5 stars.

I actually came across this little gem literally by accident -- browsing through one of Amazon's current "Best Sellers" lists for various flavours of scifi. I thought that if Mitch Hogan had written a scifi story, I should probably check it out.

I'm glad I did. It is a good, old-fashioned- action-filled story with an interesting protagonist. If he starts to make this a series, I will definitely buy and read any and all of the follow-up books.

Highly recommended.

His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass / The Subtle Knife / The Amber Spyglass, by Philip Pullman

The only hardcover omnibus of the best-selling and award-winning fantasy trilogy, in a Contemporary Classics edition.

Philip Pullman's trilogy is a masterpiece that transcends genre and appeals to readers of all ages. His heroine, Lyra, is an orphan living in a parallel universe in which science, theology, and magic are entwined. The epic story that takes us through the three novels is not only a spellbinding adventure featuring armored polar bears, magical devices, witches, and daemons, it is also an audacious and profound reimagining of Milton's Paradise Lost that has already inspired a number of serious books of literary criticism. Like J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis before him, Pullman has invented a richly detailed and marvelously imagined world, complex and thought-provoking enough to enthrall adults as well as younger readers. An utterly entrancing blend of metaphysical speculation and bravura storytelling, His Dark Materials is a monumental and enduring achievement.

In the epic trilogy His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to worlds parallel to our own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn't destroyed first. The three books in Pullman's heroic fantasy series, published as mass-market paperbacks with new covers, are united here in one boxed set that includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Join Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest as they embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands. (Ages 13 and older)

Read this series.
By Joanna Tova Price
Pullman's trilogy is not to be missed for science fiction and philosophy lovers, in my opinion. It is a coming of age story, in more than just the usual sense. In the alternate England where this story is set, souls exist outside the bodies as animals referred to as "daemons," and their shape is set at adolescence, when the child becomes an adult. Before that time, the daemon can change into whatever animal form it would like. In this compelling take on the "soul," the "soul" has indisputable agency and voice, and each person finds him or herself in a relationship with is or her own soul, as opposed to seeing the soul as the self. Lyra, the protagonist, sets out to discover why children off the streets of Oxford are going missing. This journey brings her to confront large ideas about politics and religion and power, the academy and the public, institutions and individuals. The trilogy - unfortunately - becomes less and less subtle as it goes on, but nonetheless I recommend the trilogy as a whole, because I do not think those readers who love The Golden Compass will do anything else besides read the sequels.

The Golden Compass, the first book in the series, is deserving of five stars and is one of my favorite novels ever. I am an avid reader and a librarian, and I particularly love this first novel because it features a strong, believable female lead, a well paced plot that focuses on ideas and politics and power play, and incredible world building. It also was the first time I read a comparison of university and street (or public) life that made me nod and say "yes, that's right." Unlike a lot of readers, I do not think this first novel or the trilogy as a whole is anti-organized religion on principle - I believe it does object to certain elements of organized religion which may well be deserving of criticism. One of the core strengths of the first book is its ability to communicate arguments about larger concepts in society while telling a genuinely good story -- it doesn't come off as preachy, or pushy, and it is eye opening, especially for the young adult target demographic, but these days, often as well for American adults.

The second book, The Subtle Knife, is a four star book in my opinion, because while it is an excellent novel, it does The Golden Compass a disservice by weakening the main character (Lyra) with a second protagonist who is male (Will). Will is an excellently written character, but his very presence makes Lyra's character weaker. If we had been introduced to Lyra in The Subtle Knife, I am certain it would be a five star book, but because The Subtle Knife is part of a series, I review it both as a novel in its own right and as a novel that exists in a series. Lyra's fierce independence is essentially in many ways stripped by a "love interest." Few authors have been able to produce a believable romantic relationship that involves a rebellious, independent woman, and Pullman is not one of them. This is not to say that he doesn't appreciate Lyra, rather, it is evident to me in reading the Subtle Knife that he struggled to produce the Lyra we knew who could also ally with something who was, in many ways, more powerful than she was -- that was something her character did not know how to do, and thus the only solution was to diminish her. It's a flaw that only lost the book one star in my own eyes because in every other way, the book lives up to expectation: it is excellently paced, it has a lot of Lee Scoresby (who is simply a phenomenal character), it continues to ask tough questions, it's hard to put down, and all of the new characters as well as some of the older ones get significant and interesting development.

The final book in the series, The Amber Spyglass, is one that I want to love. But the fact of the matter is, it has a significant flaw that I cannot overlook: it's all to clear, reading the third novel, what Pullman is trying to push. The story is sacrificed for the philosophy, the sentimentality in places is overbearing, and this makes the fact that the ideas are still compelling even more frustrating. The final book is probably a two star book, but if I was reviewing it by itself, I would probably give it three stars, out of loyalty to the series. Indeed, the redeeming elements of this book are all to do with its tying up of plot points, redemption of certain characters that is gratifying, its own seemingly self aware points about the power of story, and the core, strong arguments about society that are the backbone of the series as a whole. I can't honestly say that by itself, it is a good book, but I do think that as part of a series, it still worth the reader's time.

Those of you who are also readers will recognize this sentiment: if you are just now coming to His Dark Materials, I am envious. There are few things in the history of my consumption of genre fiction (and even literary fiction) that come close to the experience of my discovery and subsequent reading of this series. I rarely say "such and such changed my life," but this series certainly changed mine, and I would love to have that experience in reading more often, it is so affirming.

These are possibly the most memorable books you will ever read!
By Don Bay
This trilogy by Philip Pullman is possibly the best reading experience you will ever have. These easy-to-read books work as well for adults as for youths. Along the way, you will find breath-taking adventure, parallel universes, witches, armored bears, strange creatures, angels, good and evil. Who says that beautiful writing is limited to books for adults? Pullman makes physics, theology, love, death and fantasy understandable for all. To say the books are opposed by the Catholic Church is to understate it.

Lyra, a brave and unconventional girl from a parallel universe, meets Will, a boy from our universe. As do all those within her universe, Lyra has a familiar named Pan with whom she can communicate and who can change to any animal form in a blink. From our universe, Will's familiar lives unseen within him until later. Lyra, with the truth-predicting golden compass, and Will, with the magic knife, go from universe to universe to fulfill
their fates while preventing the all-powerful Church from subverting and destroying all that is good.

You will carry Lyra, Will, Mary and the others within you for the rest of your life. By all means, read this trilogy. You will thank your lucky stars you did.

The best edition of a great book.
By Christina
His dark materials is a fantastic trilogy that promotes self awareness in youths. Unlike many youth novels, this trilogy has a truly strong willed young woman as a main character that doesn't get stuck in a love triangle or the trope of having to be consistently saved by her male counterpart. Lyra is a truly enjoyable firebrand of a girl that is both believable and lovable while Will is an average salt of the earth young man that is both reliable and heartwarming. It has been some time since I have originally read this series and I look forward to doing it again with this beautiful hardcover edition.
