Great Tale of the Eastern Frontier

I love this book! Eckert's classic tale of Simon Kenton and settlement of the Ohio Valley is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the United States. This book was recommended to me after reading Eckert's "Dark and Bloody River". It is exciting, highly engaging, and historically detailed. The notes at the end of the book are a novel by themselves. The story of Kenton, Boone, and the Kentucky settlers is truly amazing. It has often been said that this should be required reading in high school and I can't help but agree. Eckert's books take place in a time and place nearly forgotten by modern Americans. Children raised on the old "Cowboys and Indians" westerns never learn that there was a whole other "West" on the Eastern frontier and the Northwest Territory. I grew up in Ohio, and I never learned about many of the events that happened in my own back yeard until I began reading Eckert! Many people are surprised to learn that there were a number of very bloody and significant battles during the Revolutionary War west of the Appalaichans, right here in Ohio in fact. A whole chapter of our history is being forgotten, but luckily, Eckert's books help to prevent that.

More Fictional Than I Expected - Still A Valuable Work On The Ohio/Kentucky Frontier

This is a difficult review to write because I have such mixed feelings about this book. It is a thrilling narrative of life on the early frontier along the Ohio River and incorporates some prodigious research into a slice of early American history that I was fascinated by. I recently spent some time in the Lexington and Cincinnati area and that visit drew me to this book even though it had been on my shelf for some time.
The author in his preface makes the claim that this is fact not fiction and that every conversation truthfully represented what passed between the respective parties even though he was taking some poetic license to aid the narrative flow. In my opinion he did much more than this attributing inner thoughts and feelings to characters including Native American characters that went beyond his own pre-established bounds. I admit that much of that embellishment makes the book highly readable. So much so that it reads more like a novel than an historical account.
In addition about halfway through the seemingly endless gruesome descriptions of the Indian's torture of their victims and captives became almost tedious for me. I am not contesting that these events happened , I'm just feeling that the author placed too much emphasis on driving home the ruthlessness and cruelty on both sides and the book for me started to take on the feel of whites vs Indians with less emphasis on the settlement of the region. The best example of what I felt were odd choices was an episode where he goes into detail about the Shawnee's capture and revenge on a couple by gutting them while tied to a tree and forcing them to circle the tree while their entrails emptied on to the ground. He immediately followed this with a short segue into a description of the birth of Simon Kenton's son John. You can argue that the juxtaposition demonstrates the full cycle of life on the frontier but for me it was over the top.
All of that said I respect the research that went into this work and the writing at times is gripping but there is at least as much fiction as fact in here and for that reason I can only give it 3 stars.

History for the young

This is just wonderful history told in a manner that captures the reader. I read the book when it first came out years ago.and loved it I wrote a review then. I had occasion recently to recommend a hood history book and I picked this one. In doing so I decided to re read it and just finished. It was even better the second time. The real Simon Kenton was a real larger than life person including Tecumseh, William Henry Harrison and George Rogers Clark. I only wish this book, and the others, Wilderness War, wilderness Empire, Dark and Bloody Ground,and Tecumseh would be made into a feature film. Eckert has done the country an invaluable service by recording our early history from the French and Indian War to end of the Shawnee country . Since the film seems unlikely everyone should read each Eckert book.
We both laugh and cry at tv reporters that ask our young college students basic history questions they are unable to answer. To those teachers that have the privilege of teaching young people please assign Eckert's books for them to read among other things.
The research cited in the Frontiersman is so extensive. I reading it I learned Andrew Jackson, great hero and President might have been ineligible to serve as President. Reliable witnesses of his family said that his mother and father immigrated from Ireland and Andrew was born on the ship enroute to America.

A woman enslaved to a sadistic general is stolen by three brothers what feel they love her. She tries to escape only to be rescued again by the brothers. There is a lot of punishments in this book." Shock" full of punishments in fact. There is a lot of anal.

Smokin Barbarian Love

Ok first of all I've learned to make sure I read the synopsis of each book I buy, not just look at the cover and I also read a mix of the reviews (if any available) This book was just what I needed full of hott sex, yes some harsh punishments but that's what I like to read about. It's the right length and price. Right now healing from a broken ankle this was perfect. No over thinking things....

I absolutely loved this novel! So hot and naughty, and it kept me up reading into the early hours of the morning. I hope Emily Tilton writes more MMMF sci-fi stories like this! Highly recommend!

A beautiful book....but not much new material for the price

As Mike Allred says in the introduction to this book, time goes by all too quick. I was surprised when I realised I'd been reading Madman for 20 years (I remember the original Tundra books arriving in my local comic shop). In nostalgic preparation for this 20th anniversary hardcover, I recently sat down and re-read the entire Madman collection and fell in love all over again. I love the enthusiasm and adventure of Madman comics, along with the honesty of its philosophical and theosophical explorations. Another altogether different advantage of reading the collected volumes is they help you forget how patchy and disparate Madman comics have been over the last five years or so: there were a few times when I almost gave up on the book because it had lost so much momentum and, as Mike noted, the world just keeps on turning.
I've also felt let down at times when the more recent releases have been really talked up but turned out to be a little thin on new material, or just plain thin. Unfortunately this collection is exactly like that. The vast majority (almost 200 of 250 pages)is reprinted artwork. Not just reprinted once, but by my reckoning this is now the fourth time that most of this art has been printed if you count the trading cards, the AAA pop picture exhibition, The Image Gargantua and Atomica collections and now this. The new content is good, the format is great, but it's also brief when you look at the book in its entirety. I don't know how Mike sees his contribution as the monumental game changer that he talked it up to be either. that's not to say it's bad...it just isn't at all monumental.
Diehard fans will no doubt buy this book and enjoy it because it is a beautiful way to present the work. I just felt a bit, well, disappointed at paying for the same stuff four times now. It's not a trivial cost either because the reprinted material makes up most of the printing costs and shipping weight on this expensive book.
I really hope I don't have to see Mike recycle this artwork for the fifth time in any future books or I'll be a lot more selective about what I buy.

Sometimes size DOES matter

Wow! Just flippin' wow!
When I opened the book I was mildly disappointed to see there was only 50 pages of comic and the rest were pinups. However, after flippin' through the book I became more and more excited. First of all because of the format. These huge pages really make the art look impressive, like posters. The quality of the glossy paper make the art look really good. I want to hang all of them on my walls like if they were original art, but my wife would object.
I'm also excited because every pinup makes me laugh. Madman always made me 'lighten up'. I'm a pretty serious guy and...hey wait a minute...I don't HAVE a wife!
Anyway, the pinups make me feel good. I like the 177 top artists who contributed. I like to see the diversity of their styles in one book.

It's true, some 80 pinups were already in the Gargantua and Atomica collections, but much smaller. I can't get over how big this book is. It makes all the difference in the world. Also, the book contains 20 pages of comics by Allred and 25 by other artists.
100 bucks is a lot for this book. But the 50 Amazon is charging is definitely not! This is my coffeetable book for the coming year. I can't stop flippin' through it.

The size is more overwhelming than the content itself, but it's still a nice collection

This book is huge. It's the size of a full-grown human torso. There are pluses and minuses that go along with that. On the plus side, you won't find comic book art much bigger than this, and there is some excellent art here that deserves all that page space. On the negative side, it's incredibly unwieldy (I had to set it on a table just to read it) and, to be honest, most of the art here either doesn't really take advantage of the size or doesn't really warrant it, at least not in my opinion. It would have been nice if the new material created specifically for this volume truly made the most of it with giant, wide-screen panels or fantastic spectacles, rather than just ordinary comic book pages blown up. Oh well.

I like Madman, but I'm not what you'd call a hardcore fan. It's fun and offbeat, and Mike Allred has been consistently rock solid for decades. He's had plenty of other projects to keep him busy, so it hasn't nearly been all Madman, but this collection is a nice tribute to him and to the character. One of the biggest reasons I picked this up was because I missed out on the Madman Gargantua HC, and because of all the incredible artists who contributed. I don't think it quite takes the place of Gargantua, but it was still a worthwhile purchase.

Most of the content here is reprinted, but I never bought it the first time around, so it's new to me. It was very cool to see the massive collection of Madman tribute art from a who's who of comic book creators past and present which comprises the bulk of the book. If you've already got a lot of Madman in your collection, most of these illustrations won't be new to you, though you certainly haven't seen them at this size. As I mentioned, most of these pieces really don't justify being reproduced at this size, but there are some pages here that are so big and gorgeous I want to cut them out with a razor, frame them and stick them on a wall. And one day I might.

Between the hefty price tag and the hefty book itself, I have a feeling most people will know what they're getting themselves into if they're thinking about buying this. I would just caution that most of the artists included to this book contributed just a page or two, and for the most part it's not usually their best work. But if you like a wide range of art styles and the fun signature camp of Madman (and of course if you don't own the bulk of the material reprinted here), this is a pretty nice collection.

Practical, proven advice that really works

Individuals and organizations often try to find one major improvement - a "home run," if you will. Someone might say, "I want to lose 50 pounds" or "we need to develop a new product that doubles revenue." Goals like that might be scary... and for good reason, as described in the new book by Robert Maurer, PhD: "The Spirit of Kaizen: Creating Lasting Excellence One Small Step at a Time."

There's one action that can lead to lots of little improvements (and, eventually, to innovation) - the adoption of the "kaizen" mindset.

Robert Maurer is a faculty member in behavioral sciences at UCLA and the University of Washington. I previously reviewed his earlier book "One Small Step Can Change Your Life: The Kaizen Way" and did a podcast interview with him about that book, which primarily focused on the application of "kaizen" (Japanese for "good change") style improvement approaches to his patients and their personal lives.

He wrote about how "small steps" in the style of kaizen (as practiced in the industrial world) could help individuals lose weight and change other personal behaviors. Instead of telling an overweight patient to start exercising an hour a day (which would cause the "fight or flight" instinct to kick in because it's a scary request), Dr. Maurer would ask a person to start exercising by just walking in place for the length of 30 seconds. This wasn't as scary, so people would try that small step, building enthusiasm and confidence that would allow them to build up to an hour a day. The success rate from starting small was much higher.

In his latest book, Maurer brings these ideas back to the workplace, with stories about how this same kaizen mindset can be applied to improve quality, boost morale, reduce costs, reduce healthcare expenses, and more. The book is focused more on businesses, hospitals, and organizations, rather than individuals - but the understanding of how change happens is based on our own personal brain chemistry and evolution. Maurer calls kaizen "a doable path to innovation" because we're more likely to have big changes occur when we start small. I wrote about similar thoughts from a Japanese hospital CEO back in November.

Maurer describes how the "reptile brain" (the amygdala) in the more complex human brain can help us, as when it's kicking in the powerful "fight or flight" response that's necessary when we are in real danger. The problem with the reptile brain is that the fight or flight response kicks in even when we merely imagine a dangerous situation or something threatening (such as losing one's job)... and this reptile brain shuts down higher level thought processes and capabilities. So, instead of saying that people shouldn't be afraid of change, we should recognize that large changes (or "radical changes," as he calls them) are scary... it's in our DNA... and we need to work to make changes smaller and, therefore, less scary.

In Chapter 1, Maurer writes of a doctor's office that he taught to use Kaizen. They were, initially, asking for innovation. But Maurer suggested that each person think about "the smallest step possible" that would improve the office. He had two rules:

1) The step couldn't cost anything (resources were tight in the struggling office)
2) The idea had to benefit the customer (the patient)

Maurer cites the American approach of "Training Within Industry" and the teachings of an American, W. Edwards Deming, in laying out the principles that allowed the clinic to dramatically reduce patient no show rates and improve patient satisfaction - lots of little improvements led to a successful practice. These aren't just Japanese practices. They are human practices that work around the world.

The clinic was hesitant to use kaizen, as are many, because the improvements seem trivial and insignificant. Kaizen and continuous improvement approaches aren't sexy or exciting... but they work. Maurer writes:

"These steps are so small that they may seem useless, but that's why they work. If the amygdala is like an alarm system, small steps are like cat burglars.... Your alarm never goes off.... You retain access to your rational, creative thoughts."

"The Spirit of Kaizen" is a short book (I read it on my flight back from Japan and it didn't take the whole trip), but it's full of examples that reinforce the core kaizen principles and our understanding of how people can embrace and initiate change for the betterment of customers (patients), themselves, and their organizations. The main themes are a bit repetitive, but they're solid and they work: start small (the smallest step possible), expect to stumble along the way, and continue striving to get better.

Best Business Book of 2012

This book is a short and useful guide to kaizen, the idea that small changes can produce big results. When we ask for big goals to be met, our brains shut down. They are overwhelmed. but when we ask "what is the one small thing we can do to get to our goal?", the brain does not get worked up and we can think clearly. A hospital wanted to increase the accuracy of the reports of its radiologists, who work alone. So, they showed them photos of patients awaiting their test results. Accuracy increased 46%. The book also highlights the power of questions to make small improvements:What is the one small thing I can do to(insert goal) that will take no more than(5,3,1) minute a day? He applies these techniques to a variety of areas, including reducing health care costs, boosting sales, and improving quality. While worth the time.

Outstanding -Real world approach to implementing permanent change!!

I stumbled on "The spirit of Kaizen" when surfing the audio channel during a long distance Trans-Atlantic flight and could not stop listening. I downloaded the book to my iPad and have bought 10 copies for all my managers.
Robert Maurer adopts a real-world, common sense approach to implementing a quality program without the bells and whistles. The contrasts between the Japanese and American psyches helps the reader bring it home when considering change initiatives particularly in the noisy, competitive and distracted business environments in which we find ourselves today. You should read it together with Chip and Dan Heath's book, "Switch".
Great read.

About the Author
Robert R. Pagano received a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1956 and a Ph.D. in Biological Psychology from Yale University in 1965. He was Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington, Seattle, from 1965 to 1989. He was Associate Chairman of the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh, from 1990 to June 2000. While there, in addition to his other duties, he served as Director of Undergraduate Studies, was the departmental adviser for undergraduate majors, taught both undergraduates and graduate statistics courses, and served as a statistical consultant for departmental faculty. Pagano was also Director of the Statistical Cores for two NIH center grants in schizophrenia and Parkinson's disease. He retired from the University of Pittsburgh in June 2000. Pagano taught introductory statistics courses at the University of Washington and at the University of Pittsburgh for over thirty years combined. While at the University of Washington, he was a finalist for the Outstanding Teaching award for his instruction of introductory statistics.

Superb Introductory Statistics Text

Prior to the first edition of this text I used a different text in my introductory statistics course each year because students did not like my text selections. I've used Pagano's text every year since the first edition was published in 1981 because every year the students tell me to retain this text. It is superbly written and exquisitely designed. It is the best text of its kind that I have seen in the past 25 years of teaching the subject.

It's Statistics....

If this is a class that is needed for graduation, then this is a good one. It accurately describes formulas to the extent that often I refer to the book over what the professor is speaking. Too frequently the prof can deviate from the actual material that a good sense of grounding is needed. Pagano effortlessly provides this backbone from which to base all statistics.

I can only speak from a psychology student's perspective, but despite my loathing for statistics, I still find this book somewhat endearing (as far as textbooks go). There are several sections that I would not have been able to pass had it not been for this books descriptions and breakdowns of problems and examples.

Though I wish there were more problems per chapter (at the end of the chapter questions and practice problems), this book provides a comprehensive introduction into statistics.

The great John Radanovich returns with a well told tale of an epic life.

In a very sly way Radanovich bring the reader along on what is a true exploration of some of the larger themes of life. His respect for detailed research is a joy as he weaves the tale of the legendary Benny More as a personal epic tale told by a friend. We travel along on this journey ending a bit too soon as most great trips do. There is no book more important to understanding the world of Cuban music that Wildman of Rhythm.

Benny Moré: The Greatest cuban singer and the best biography

I met the author during the Generoso Jimenez' funeral when I was introduced by the deceased's daughter in 2007. I was skeptical that this white , young bespectacled american man could write a book about "El Benny". After exchanging a few words I realized that John was the person that could do an excellent job and indeed he did!.

Only a couple of small books were written about Benny previously and they were incomplete and in cheap paper as opposed to this masterpiece in hardcover, fine paper with some very good pictures.

From the beginning when the author mentions how he got acquainted with Benny when living in New Orleans and how he started a serious research that took him to Cuba a couple of times in 2000 when he met Generoso Jimenez and 2007 when he visited Benny'house in La Cumbre and talked to Hilda, his daughter.

To ensure that information was accurate he interviewed musicians that actually worked with Benny like Generoso, Chocolate Armenteros, Enrique Benitez and others. The book is divided into 15 chapters in chronological order that cover his youth, african roots, hard life and his move to Havana and all the problems he faced playing in the bars and in the streets for cents, his acquaintance with Miguel Matamoros whose famous trio accompanied Benny in his first recordings and trip to Mexico. Covered in detail is his life in this big city and the problems he faced in this city because he was not a mexican and did not have the musician's union card, his work later when through Chicho (not Chico) Piquero he was able to obtain the union card.

His recording activities with several groups and orchestras like Mariano Merceron, Perez Prado and Rafael de Paz plus others is thoroughly evaluated, his marriage to a young mexican girl plus his work in the movies and acquaintance with artists like Ninon Sevilla, Amalia Aguilar, Pedro Infante is depicted.

Upon his return to Cuba he was already famous but it was not an easy transition and the author digs deep into Benny's activities recording again with Merceron, Ernesto Duarte and others prior to forming his own band.

There are several chapters with tons of information previously unknown and some misinformation or fables are clarified. This book should be read not only by Benny's fans but also music collectors, researchers of cuban music, music teachers, musicians and just about any person who wants to penetrate inside the cuban music and know about this fascinating singer who died too young caused by exccesive drinking.

He was a sociable, very intelligent musician who never went to music school but his feeling and his gift of a privileged ear allowed him to be a great orchestra director. He could not write arrangements but he hired the best arrangers and had them do whatever he wanted for his big band.

His love life, relationship with the mafia dons such as Meyer Lansky and Santo Trafficante as well as President Fulgencio Batista is also covered. His lovig relationship with his musicians that adored and respected him for being understanding and compassionate.

I was impressed for his accurate description of each of his recordings and the story behind them and his trips to Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Colombia, Panama, New York and California (in these two cities he was accompanied by the great orchestra director Tito Puente).

The author describe in detail the progressive deterioration of his health and the last moments that were very painful that drove me to tears.

Benny's myth has had a meteorical rise in popularity through the years and his records have been selling consistently with reissues and recently, a movie was made about his life. Celia Cruz with whom Benny had a good relationship labelled him "the greatest cuban singer"

Do yourself a favor: buy this book through Amazon where you could get it for less than $20, which is a steal and when you finish reading it, nobody will be able to come to you to tell all the fables and stories about "El Benny' because John covered all the bases and those who don't know much about this legendary singer will start to buy his records.

This biography of one of Cuba's greatest and most beloved musicians was excellent. I could not put the book down once I began reading it. The book also gives great information on other great musicians such as Generoso Jimenez and the exciting nightlife scene of Havana in pre-Castro days. Thank you so much to the author for this gem. I was a young child in Cuba and Benny came to my town to play during carnival time. I still treasure the memory of my brief meeting with the Wildman of Rhythm, such an apt English description for El Barbaro del Ritmo. Even my American born daughter has Benny's hits on her iphone. Who could have told that 50 years after Benny's death, his life and music would still be remembered and cherished by those who knew of him and by generations born decades after his passing. Benny surely would be pleased. Again, thanks so much to the author, John Radanovich, for this jewel.

Useful methods to improve your conversations

I bought this volume of "Conversation Tactics" because I wanted to improve my social interactions with my friends and new people I meet. Don't expect an overnight change, but King offers a lot of ideas and step-by-step methods to improve your conversations. Your part, however, is to practice it and figure out what works for you.

I felt I got immediate responses from trying some of the techniques in the book. For example, when meeting some new people, I saw an opportunity to try one of the described humor methods. Somewhat surprisingly, the method seemed to elicit genuine laughs from my new acquaintances, and that experience reinforced to me that the book's information was worthwhile.

Some of the explanations seemed repetitive, but there was enough content in the book that I felt its length was justified. One thing I felt was not sufficiently discussed was how to gauge other people's interest in the conversation, when to change the subject, how to keep everyone engaged, etc, and some other things seemed only briefly touched on without solid examples. However, there was a lot of useful material to work with nonetheless.

Overall, I found it to be a pretty good book for the price and length.

Good, Great, Grand!

If you're looking for a book that has a 'heartfelt' feel to it, this is not your book. This book gets straight into it using emotional logic and 'put yourself in these shoes' sort of feel. Most of it is based on the author's experience as a sort of counselor, which gives proven and effective methods to communication, albeit one of them was a bit of memorization - which is inconvenient. The teachings are not meant to be used for a specific situation, rather it just outlines what should and shouldn't be done so you can be yourself without using some cliché line to save face. Overall this book is great for those who need an upper-hand with any kind of relationship, be it romantic, business, serious, casual, and more.

About the Author

Tero Karvinen teaches Linux and embedded systems in Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, where his work has also included curriculum development and research in wireless networking. He previously worked as a CEO of a small advertisement agency. Tero's education includes a Masters of Science in Economics.

Kimmo Karvinen works as a CTO in hardware manufacturer that specializes in integrated AV and security systems. Before that he worked as a marketing communications project leader and as a creative director and partner in advertisement agency. Kimmo's education includes a Masters of Art.

Misleading

After reading through this book I feel completely mislead. This book is actually more about something perhaps better called a mind activated robot. This book shows you how to hook up a neurosky mindwave eeg interface and hook it up to a line reading robot, the only thing the thinking portion does is essentially make the robot move forward, all other steering is handled by line reading, and the actual control interface is really a 2 line of code loop saying forward and then turn at the line if any brain activity is happening. When I see the words mind controlled robot, I want something that shows me how to build a robot that goes where I think it should go; forward, back, turn, circles, figure 8s and around the couch and the kitchen table with me steering it by thought.

This should have been a book focused only on EEG sensors!

The title and the first 3 pages feel like a 5-star: they tell you about the EEG sensor with a NeuroSky's MindWave. Later on, they describe the sensor's interface and tell you how to "Measure Your Brains with MindWave". That's very cool and interesting stuff, we all agree.

However, most of the book is about building a robot with Arduino. I love Arduino and robot sensors, but it becomes a bit misleading in this context. I was interested way more in the EEG sensor alone, the robot was just an accessory and the authors tried to look too much for "sensational" stuff.

Demonstrates the power of the Arduino community

The Arduino open-source development has swept the hobbist/Maker market. Its combination of a fairly powerful microcontroller, a good integrated development enviorment, an easy-to--use program language and a host of third-party and open source add-ons and projects. Makes it a natural starting point for anyone experimenting with robotics, automation and control.

This book shows how to use Arduino to build a robot controlled by brainwaves, thanks to a one such add-on kit. The robot is simple enough to be a beginner's project and the book is complete enough to take you through the steps, including the program needed to make the thing run.

This ain't Robbie The Robot from Forbidden Planet. The robot and its associated control system are both pretty crude and its capabilities are limited. But by the same token it's an easy project to build and seves as a great introduction to both robotics and the Arduino system.

Best of all, the Arduino is open source and extensible. If you want to add on to your project later, you have what you need at your fingertips.

For a bright 12-year-old (with a little adult participation) on up, this is one of the best ways to get into robotics.
