Great book, easy to follow and implement

This is a great book! I purchased it on a whim about a year ago and have found it extremely useful. It's very well illustrated, easy to reference, has great photos, and I like how they explain both the healing properties of the crystals and how to use them in daily life. You can look up info on individual crystals/gemstones, by type of healing needed, by astrological sign, placement types for healings (e.g. to wear it vs. place next to bed), etc. All the examples are very current and can be applied immediately to any situation. Every time I read it I find more to enjoy about it and learn. Before this book I wasn't that in to crystals, but its been so easy to get in to that I find myself more and more intrigued with the depth of the knowledge this book offers. I would definitely recommend it!

Good beginner book

I find the Crystal User's Handbook to be more of an introductory book to crystals and their uses. It was one of the first crystal books I purchased when I became interested in the uses and properties of crystals.
Overall the book is divided up into sections, crystals for stress relief, relaxation, physical well-being, immune system, etc. In each section there is a basic list of stones/crystals that would be helpful.
I did find interesting in the Physical Well-Being section, it shows on figures which areas are most commonly affected due to your Zodiac sign.
The book also has a brief introduction to the chakras, and states what each chakra does or represents.
There are also sections that state which crystals help with your home, workplace, love, and protection. Also a nice little section about the different ways one can cleanse and care for their crystals.
Lastly there is a section about which crystals are beneficial to a persons' zodiac sign, a basic directory for crystals and what ailments they help, and lastly a brief Gemstone and Crystal directory.
If you are wanting a book that goes more into what exactly each crystal and gemstone are I would not recommend this book. If you are wanting a book that starts you off into learning about working with crystals and gemstones; what they can be used for, how to care for them, etc. then this book is a great start.

Nearly 200 full color illustrations take the reader on a wondrous tour of Angelico's beautiful expressions of faith, while the text spares no detail in chronicling Angelico's life, inspiration, and legacy to later masters including Raphael, the Nazarenes, and the Symbolists. A classical art lover's treasury, enthusiastically recommended for public library and private artbook collections.

About the Author

George G. Fenich, Ph.D., is a professor in the Hospitality Management Department at East Carolina University. Dr. Fenich worked in the hospitality industry for 15 years before joining academe. He teaches and researches in the area of conventions and meetings, has written over 60 academic articles, and has presented at over 150 conferences—including the International Council on Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Education, the Destination Marketing Association International, the Association for Convention Operations Management, the International Association of Assembly Managers, AHTMM in Istanbul, Taipei and Mauritius, the International Conference on Meetings & Events held in Shanghai China, and the Professional Convention Management Association. He is on the editorial board of six academic journals—including editor in chief for the Journal of Convention and Event Tourism. He has written books on meetings and events including the third edition of this text, Meetings, Expositions, Events, and Conventions published by Pearson in January of 2011, Planning and Management of Meetings, Expositions, Events, and Conventions published by Pearson in January of 2014, and Production and Logistics in Meetings, Expositions, Events, and Conventions, also published by Pearson in March of 2014. He is also the principal of the consulting firm Fenich & Associates LLC.

Rachel Meyer is a language school owner, Mandarin teacher, textbook author and former Chinese television actress. She is an enthusiastic language learner with fluency in Mandarin, Spanish and French. Outstanding, finally someone gets it right.

For several years I have been becoming more sceptical about all the acclaimed wonders of Mandarin grammar books available through online sellers. The acquisition of this book totals 38 books I now have on the nebulous topic of "Chinese" language. This book is a reflection of the toils of a learner who somehow put it all together to acquire fluency. Whereas many Chinese born authors write a rehash of the troubled education system in their home country, Rachel Meyer from America nails it in her first book.

There are many things that many authors do not consider when writing. Readability is the most overlooked. The author makes great use of complementing colours and large readable fonts. Anyone who has read "Chinese through Tone and Colour" knows the headache of poor layout. There is generous spacing, no clustering and it is easy to relax and read without strain.

Content of course makes the book. This book is a systematic and gradual progression of the most useful characters compiling the most useful grammatical constructions. Characters are introduced with pronunciation, Hanyu Pinyin, meaning and then simple useful sentences. There is no searching all over the book to chase the components of each character. Repetition is gently integrated without the psychosis of Pimsleur. The integration of pronouns, verbs, proper nouns, adverbs, and nouns is so well balanced that useful sentences compile at a comforting rate.

The author effectively inserts anecdotes, cultural points, idioms and humour.

As an author, I know that indexes can take as long to write as the book. Rachel Meyer indexes English-Pinyin-character and Pinyin-English-character. This makes the utility of the book so much more useful and creates a dictionary of all terms and character in the book.

Every facet of what you need is in this book, text book, definitions, work book, dictionary, cultural tips, it is simply awesome.

As this book is "Level 1", I hope "Level 2" is in the works.

Language books are grossly over represented in used book stores and garage sales, this is not a reflection of people's lack of interest in learning languages but a reflection of horrid writing and good marketing. I highly recommend this book for both the beginner and the student who wants to consolidate their independent learning or their poorly taught course work.

Terrific book for introductory Chinese

I was a Chinese minor in college. The only thing I remember now thirty years later is that the textbooks from that era were really, really bad. I am now studying Chinese in an evening class, and we use Chit-Chat Chinese as a textbook. Wow! What a difference. Chit-Chat Chinese is about the most nearly perfect introductory textbook for a foreign language that I have ever seen. It's heavily oriented toward Americans who wish to learn Chinese: its sample sentences contains cartoons of George Clooney, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and even Mini Me ("Mini Me ai bu ai," or "Is Mini Me short?") Very splashy and fun, but also very thorough on Chinese phonology and grammar, and all written from the perspective of someone who struggled to learn Chinese and is now freely sharing the tricks, shortcuts, and explanations that make the most sense to English-speaking people. Even comes with a CD. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Xiexie, Rachel Meyer!

This book has great audio resources, but seems a bit rushed and unfinished. The English segments are well edited but my teacher frequently would have us correct the Chinese segments. The website has all of the audio elements uploaded but the website pretty much ends there with lots of "coming soon" messages from 2013. Each lesson begins with a section on Pinyin pronunciation, but many of the key sound differences were introduced way too late, in my opinion (for example the difference between qi and chi, or qu and chu.) It's a decent resource for an evening class but wouldn't stand up to collegiate or even high school level requirements, especially considering that there is no intermediate level available.

I would like to see the website updated with vocabulary lists.

About the Author
Angi M. Christensen, PhD, D-ABFA

Angi M. Christensen is a Forensic Anthropologist with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Laboratory in Quantico, Virginia. Her primary responsibilities include conducting forensic anthropological casework and providing training for FBI agents and other law enforcement personnel, and she facilitated the development of the FBI’s Forensic Anthropology Program. She is also an Adjunct Professor in the Forensic Science Program at George Mason University.

Angi received her BA in Anthropology at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA (1997), and her MA and PhD in Anthropology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN (2000 and 2003). Her research interests include methods of personal identification, trauma analysis, elemental analysis, and underwater taphonomy. She has published articles in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, the American Journal of Physical Anthropology, Forensic Science International, the Journal of Anatomy, and Forensic Science Communications.

Angi is a board certified Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, a Fellow in the Physical Anthropology Section of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the Scientific Working Group for Forensic Anthropology.

Nick Passalacqua is a deploying forensic anthropologist with the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command’s Central Identification Laboratory (JPAC CIL). Nick received his B.A. in Anthropology at Michigan State University in 2005, his M.S. in Anthropology from Mercyhurst College (now Mercyhurst University) in 2007, another M.A. in Anthropology from Michigan State University in 2011, and his Ph.D. in Anthropology from Michigan State in 2012.
Prior to his work at the JPAC CIL, Nick served as a visiting scientist at the National Institute of Legal Medicine - North Branch (Porto, Portugal); worked as a bioarchaeologist for the Medieval Spanish archaeological sites of the Castro de Chao Samart�n, Iglesia de El Salvador, and San Julian de Vi�on; instructed mass fatality incident response courses for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA); assisted with numerous years of Mercyhurst University’s summer short courses in forensic anthropology; and instructed three semesters of anthropology courses as adjunct faculty at Lansing Community College.
Nick’s research interests include: age-at-death estimation, skeletal trauma and taphonomy, paleodemography, and paleopathology. Dr. Passalacqua’s bioarchaeological dissertation research focused on issues of health and demography in Medieval Asturias, Spain. Nick has publications in such journals as: The Journal of Forensic Sciences, The International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, and The American Journal of Physical Anthropology, as well as chapters in such books as: The analysis of burned human remains, Age estimation of the human skeleton, and A companion to forensic anthropology.

Eric J. Bartelink is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Director of the Human Identification Laboratory at California State University, Chico. He received his B.S. in Anthropology at Central Michigan University (1995), his M.A. in Anthropology at California State University, Chico (2001), and his Ph.D. in Anthropology at Texas A&M University (2006). He became the 89th Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology in 2012. Eric’s interests are in forensic anthropology and bioarchaeology, and he has conducted research focused on skeletal trauma, taphonomy, paleopathology, and stable isotope analysis. He has conducted an extensive research program focused on central California bioarchaeology, and also conducted work in American Samoa. In 2000, he assisted with the excavation of mass graves in Bosnia-Herzegovina through the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, and also assisted in the identification of victims from the World Trade Center 9/11 disaster in 2002 and 2003. He has published articles in Journal of Forensic Sciences, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, Journal of Archaeological Sciences, International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, Archaeometry, and California Archaeology.

Eric teaches courses in introductory physical anthropology, human osteology, forensic anthropology, bioarchaeology, forensic science, and statistics. He is Fellow of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, and a member of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, Society of American Archaeology, Paleopathology Association, and the Society for California Archaeology. He is current board member of the Scientific Working Group for Forensic Anthropology and the American Board of Forensic Anthropology.
