The Biology of Belief: Unleashing the Power of Consciousness, Matter & Miracles, by Bruce H. Lipton

This 10th-anniversary edition of Bruce Lipton’s best-selling book The Biology of Belief has been updated to bolster the book’s central premise with the latest scientific discoveries—and there have been a lot in the last decade.
The Biology of Belief is a groundbreaking work in the field of new biology. Former medical school professor and research scientist Bruce H. Lipton, Ph.D., presents his experiments, and those of other leading-edge scientists, which examine in great detail the mechanisms by which cells receive and process information. The implications of this research radically change our understanding of life, showing that genes and DNA do not control our biology; instead, DNA is controlled by signals from outside the cell, including the energetic messages emanating from our positive and negative thoughts. This profoundly hopeful synthesis of the latest and best research in cell biology and quantum physics has been hailed as a major breakthrough, showing that our bodies can be changed as we retrain our thinking.

Dr. Lipton at his best!
By Long Living Pets
I'm a big fan of Dr. Lipton and his teachings. How he explains the function of the cells, where the brain of the cell is located and how genes can be epigenetically modified for the good and bad is fascinating and easy to understand. Lipton gives mankind hope for the future. It's all about the environment and we can do something about that. We're not victims of our genes like so many like us to be. Highly recommend this book and also the 'Wisdom of Your Cells' (only available as an ebook or audio).

This Book. This Book. Everyone needs to read this book. If there is one book you read this year that will help you grow - this is it.

Sorry. You are totally responsible for how you feel, and how you feel determines is you grow or die. You can't do both, and no matter what, your doing one or the other.

This book will help you snap into grow mode.

I also recommend "You are the Placebo" by Dr. Joe Dispenza. Another great book driving the same point home. Both books compliment each other, but I'd recommend reading this one first.

Believ in the wonder of our Biology
By Kathleen Byrnes
Bruce Lipton has a gift for telling a story about a complicated subject in simple, clear and humorous format. He also makes his personal story feel like it could be the reader's story. And what a story it is !!!! A story based on the real science of how our sacred biology is already designed to help us eliminate components of dis-ease, and self-heal all trauma.............a great read for the curious believer in Life's wonderment !!

The Association Game: A History of British Football, by Matthew Taylor

The story of British football's journey from public school diversion to mass media entertainment is a remarkable one.The Association Game traces British football from the establishment of the earliest clubs in the nineteenth century to its place as one of the prominent and commercialised leisure industries at the beginning of the twenty first century. It covers supporters and fandom, status and culture, big business, the press and electronic media and development in playing styles, tactics and rules.

This is the only up to date book on the history of British football, covering the twentieth century shift from amateur to professional and whole of the British Isles, not just England.

The Association Game

Matthew Taylor

The book is excellent, the best in the field...an impressive piece of scholarship that provides a thorough synthesis of all significant writing on the history of British football by historians, geographers, political scientists and sociologists.Wray Vamplew,Professor of Sports History and Director of Research in Sports Studies,University of Stirling.

Beginning with football’s humble beginnings as a public-school diversion to the multi-million pound industry that it is today, The Association Game tells the remarkable story of Britain’s biggest, most popular national pastime. In tracing the history of the game from the first clubs and associations to its current position at the centre of British culture, Matthew Taylor seeks answers to the most important questions in football today:

  • Has the so-called ‘people’s game’ been transformed into a vehicle of global commercial interests?

  • Have its star performers lost touch with their roots?

  • Has football reinforced or challenged national identities in Britain?

  • Is British football in terminal decline?

Combining the most recent popular and academic writing on football, this highly informative read also includes in-depth investigations into the nature of ‘fandom’, the development of playing styles, the business of football itself, and of course the development of tactics and ‘rules of the game’. Taylor addresses the great controversies of the game, debating such topics as the status and earning of professional players and the phenomenon of hooliganism.

The Association Game is the first book to discuss football’s development in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as its relationship with Europe and the wider world. Nobody who is serious about football should be without this book.

Matthew Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Portsmouth. His previous books include: Moving with the Ball: The Migration of Professional Footballers (with Pierre Lanfranchi, 2001) and The Leaguers: The Making of Professional Football in England 1900-1939 (2005).

Bobcat and Other Stories, by Rebecca Lee

Rebecca Lee, one of our most gifted and original short story writers, guides readers into a range of landscapes, both foreign and domestic, crafting stories as rich as novels. A student plagiarizes a paper and holds fast to her alibi until she finds herself complicit in the resurrection of one professor's shadowy past. A dinner party becomes the occasion for the dissolution of more than one marriage. A woman is hired to find a wife for the one true soulmate she's ever found. In all, Rebecca Lee traverses the terrain of infidelity, obligation, sacrifice, jealousy, and yet finally, optimism. Showing people at their most vulnerable, Lee creates characters so wonderfully flawed, so driven by their desire, so compelled to make sense of their human condition, that it's impossible not to feel for them when their fragile belief in romantic love, domestic bliss, or academic seclusion fails to provide them with the sort of force field they'd expected.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, June 2013: How do you judge a short story collection? By its consistency? How often you laugh? Or by the number of times it breaks your heart? With Bobcat and Other Stories, the answer to the last question is seven, which is the number of stories that make up Rebecca Lee's first short story collection (and hopefully far from her last). The title story is perhaps the best example of what Lee does best. An innocuous dinner party reveals to the narrator that her marriage is disintegrating (or were those signs always there?). She says her honeymoon "haunted our marriage a little, mostly because it was a little sad for reasons I couldn't comprehend and felt I shouldn't disturb." Bobcat is a tricky balancing act. Lee has a knack for nuance, but never lets her subtlety dull the emotional punch. Even as her characters wrestle with tragic internal dilemmas, there's a distinct sense of humor that perseveres throughout. Bobcat and Other Stories is one of the strongest collections I've read in recent years. --Kevin Nguyen

From Booklist
Lee follows her superb first novel, The City Is a Rising Tide (2006), with an equally arresting and distinctive short story collection, in which her global perspective engenders strange encounters. The arch and clawing title story, though fastened to the well-worn armature of a Manhattan dinner party, zooms out in myriad directions as a woman describes losing a limb to a bobcat in Nepal, and the pregnant hostess worries about a coworker’s affair. Intrigued by the life-altering reverberations of hubris, friendship, marriage, class clashes, and betrayal, Lee, herself like a great cat in her stealth, speed, and slashing attacks, takes on academe in several mind-whirling stories, including one set in 1987 in which an act of plagiarism ignites a peculiar, heartrending alliance between a hazy-minded student and her professor, a Polish immigrant accused of being a “Soviet puppet.” In “Min,” an American college student accompanies her friend to Hong Kong, where he will join his father in working with Vietnamese refugees and enter into an arranged marriage. Lee’s gorgeously crafted, scintillating stories are imaginative and incisive, funny and profound. --Donna Seaman

Review

“The collection has so many good passages – whole paragraphs that move into pages with never a misstep – that any linguaphile could spend a great afternoon in a little spasm of dazzle. But a story is more than a collection of words, and these seven long tales demonstrate Lee’s prodigious talent for creating not just great lines but intricately structured, impressively plotted worlds.”―The New York Times Book Review

“Mesmerizingly strange . . . Full of shivers and frissons . . . Highly imaginative stories . . . [Lee’s] eccentric eloquence . . . makes Bobcat so potent and unpredictable.”―Janet Maslin for The New York Times

“Sometimes you reach the end of a story and go quietly, ‘Oh.’ And sometimes you gasp and go, ‘Holy guacamole!’ Not because a building fell down or a character died, but because the unexpected yet completely understandable came to pass―and made you fall off your chair. Again and again this happens in Rebecca Lee's slim, sly, brilliant book Bobcat.”―Oprah.com

"Wise and funny . . . [A] near-perfect collection."―Entertainment Weekly

“[W]ith deadpan humor, Lee’s light touch illuminates the contrasts in everyday life―warmth and cold, past and present, beauty and terror―imbuing her realistic tales with quiet depth.”―Bust

"Astonishing prose . . . This fresh, provocative collection, peerless in its vehement elucidation of contemporary foibles, is not to be missed."―Publishers Weekly, starred review

“[M]ake some room in your tote bag for this: ‘Bobcat,’ a slim volume of short stories by a prodigiously talented writer, Rebecca Lee. Her work is at once effortless and exacting, sophisticated and ribald.”―Denver Post

“[A] breath of fresh air, squarely realist, but possessed of some of its own strange magic, the kind of book that it feels right to call ‘dazzling’ and ‘understated’ in the same breath.”―Flavorwire

"Lee covers a wide terrain in only seven stories, touching on fidelity, sacrifice, jealousy, and obligation, with stories that often dial out slowly from tightly-focused beginnings."―PublishersWeekly.com, "Best Summer Books 2013" list

"A shining example of furious and smart writing."―LibraryJournal.com

“[An] arresting and distinctive short story collection . . . Lee’s gorgeously crafted, scintillating stories are imaginative and incisive, funny and profound.”―Booklist

glimpses of brilliance
By She Treads Softly
Bobcat and Other Stories by Rebecca Lee is a collection of seven short stories. The stories included are: Bobcat; Banks of the Vistula; Slatland; Min; World Party; Fialta; Settlers.
"Bobcat," the opening story, features a dinner party that foreshadows some unexpected results and entertains doubts about the veracity of more than one guest's story.
In "Banks of the Vistula" a student plagiarist is known but not quite revealed.
"Slatland" has a character who encounters the same therapist twice in her life under very different circumstances.
A young woman helps find a suitable spouse for her male best friend in "Min".
In "World Party" a committee composed of peers must rule on the behavior of another professor.
During a summer retreat at "Fialta" student architects learn more about life than academics.
The closing story, "Settlers," features close friends over several dinner parties, culminating in one unforgettable one.

All of these stories feature characters who are well educated. Many are involved in academia as students or professors. Lee's stories are all told from a first-person perspective as they delve into juxtaposed contrasting themes involving faithfulness, friendship, security, apathy, honesty, and relationships. The writing is richly descriptive and captures many nuances and layers of thought and meaning in each of the stories. Often it felt like what was at the edge of being said or revealed was looming over the seemingly everyday conversations between the characters.

In several cases, as I reached the end of a story I was filled with a sense of melancholy. The endings struck me as raw, unfinished, in a way because there was no definite conclusion, or, perhaps, overriding answer to some of the concerns of the characters or actions in the stories. It made each story sort of an exquisite little glimpse into only part of a life, never the whole. This created a sort of a "little Match Girl" syndrome for me; I was seeing these glimpses of brilliance that ended too soon and I wanted more. The quandary is, naturally, that giving me more would not necessarily equate a better story.

very highly recommended

One of my favorite books in the last year
By Speedreader
This is such a special collection of stories. I was in love from the first story all the way to the last. I read the book while traveling and it made me so happy even through turbulence, small planes and crying children. Rebecca Lee is such a talented writer her stories are sophisticated, layered, funny at times, crisp and wise. Strongly encourage other customers to purchase this book This is the first review I've ever given on Amazon-I am that passionate about the book...I wanted to let other people know about it.

Rebecca Lee Has a Gift With Words
By Fairbanks Reader - Bonnie Brody
Rebecca Lee has a wonderful way with words. The stories in this collection vary in their consistency but her writing style all but makes up for that.

In the title story, a dinner party is held and more than one marriage ends in dissolution due to a surprise visit.

On the Banks of the Vistula is about a college student who plagiarizes a paper and her professor is suspicious. She manages to convince him that she wrote it herself but the repercussions are both more, and less, than she imagined.

In Slatland, an eleven year-old girl sees a therapist one time for depressions. He teaches her about Slatland, a way to go above yourself, look down on things, and gain perspective. This works for twenty years until she believes that the Romanian man that she is engaged to is really committed to someone else.

Min is about a young woman who goes with her closest male friend to Hong Kong. There, she is charged with the task of finding an appropriate wife for him. The dynamics of this are complex and confusing to her.

In World Party, a female professor is asked to vote on the appropriateness of a colleague's tacit encouragement for students going on a hunger strike. At the same time, she is worrying about her son who is both extremely intelligent and eerily odd.

Fialta is an architectural community where a young man goes for a residency. Love affairs are forbidden here but he falls hard for a woman named Sands and jeopardizes his time there.

All in all, the stories were spotty with some leaving me scratching my head. However, as I said before, Lee has a gift with words and the reading itself was very satisfying.

Excellent! One of the best books on Spinal Manual Therapy I have come across. The new expanded chapter on the assessment and treatment of the pelvis and the other on the treatment strategies of the Lumbosacral Junction make this book well worth studying. A must-have for the serious Manual Therapist.

The best and most complete books on the subject of the Riemann Hypothesis.
By Martijn13Maart1970
I have read a lot of the existing 'popular' books on the subject of the Riemann Hypothesis (RH) and these three books by Matthew Watkins provide the most complete picture. By this I mean you get all the facts, history and current research on RH that other books also provide, but this trilogy goes deeper, yet in such a way that it remains readable. The subject of RH is in fact very deep and probably only really understandable for the few specialist mathematicians that work with it daily, but still, it also touches on the fundamental and seemingly simple subject of the link between addition and multiplication. We all know what addition is, and multiplication - or don't we really? Since this is the key to a real understanding of RH, the link between addition and multiplication is extensively elaborated, up the point of metaphysics. The conclusion is startling after all - when you start with the natural numbers, you stumble onto the seemingly simple prime numbers, and eventually in our voyage of discovery of how these primes are divided along the natural number line, we see there is an underlying grand scheme that (might, provide RH is true) goes beyond our wildest dream. But the question is, what was there first, our 'primitive' counting, or this vast structure?
I highly recommend reading all three books, since these books go beyond the subject of RH itself, and explains why mathematics and numbers are part of our existence.

don't just believe me, check out these reviews:
By Matthew Watkins
"The Secrets of Creation trilogy is one of the most remarkable works of maths popularisation that I have read. Matthew Watkins has a gift for exposition, a gushing passion for his subject and a completely fresh way of approaching basic – and not so basic – mathematical ideas. He has written a brilliantly original work that is both whimsical and cosmically profound. I would recommend it to anyone."
Alex Bellos, author of Alex's Adventures in Numberland and Alex Through the Looking-Glass

"The author is at pains to make his exposition readily accessible to any intelligent reader...This is an unusual and fascinating book, which even experts on prime number theory are likely to find of interest."
Prof. Brian Josephson, Times Higher Education, 9th June 2011

"Many thanks for sending me a copy of your fascinating-looking book... Although I have not had the opportunity to go through it yet in any detail, I should say that it is exactly the kind of thing that I would have enjoyed tremendously and found extremely illuminating in my younger days—in fact, I think this is still the case and I look forward enormously to looking at it in more detail when I get the time. I showed it to my wife, Vanessa, who is the head of the mathematics department at Abingdon School, and she was equally thrilled by the presentation."
Sir Roger Penrose (Oxford University)

"Very kind of you to send your new book. It's very well produced and attractive. I think you've made it really interesting, with well-chosen contents. The illustrations are excellent as well. It deserves to sell a lot of copies."
Ian Stewart (Warwick University)

"The pictures alone will attract readers on this stimulating odyssey into the magic and mystery of numbers."
Clifford Pickover

"[U]nlike the numerous popular books that have probed deeply into the beauty and mystery of the prime numbers and the Riemann Hypothesis (such as the ones by M. du Sautoy, J. Derbyshire, etc.), this one is unique in many aspects. It is the only book geared towards general audience that actually gives an account of the complexity of the distribution of the prime numbers while containing almost no equations.
So, how did the author achieve this? Through the radiant wit of the illustrations paired up with the exceptional writing. Additionally, his success is due to the simplicity of the explanations, which in an engaging manner reveal complex concepts with such clarity as to make the book accessible to children and non-mathematicians. Lastly, the exposition of the beauty of the harmonic decomposition is superb.
...
Every argument in the book is backed up vividly by numerous illustrative examples and user-friendly visualizations. The illustrator, Matt Tweed, has provided brilliant drawings that convey and explain the mathematical ideas and concepts as they develop throughout the book. What could have been rigorous text saturated with formulas is replaced by the many entertaining illustrations which also offer an intuitive understanding of the technical complexities behind the text...(My 3-year old son literally could not put this book down; he had many questions and comments about what happens in the drawings.)

This is a very unusual and inspiring book with the potential to spark interest even among experts on prime number theory. The exciting and original presentation is instructive and stimulates further study. Diving into the mystery of numbers in this book leaves one thirsting for the subsequent two volumes."
Ana Momidic-Reyna, Mathematical Association of America Reviews

"This is a fantastic book. A fabulous book. A splendiferous book!

It's easy enough to say what the book is about: it explains some extremely fascinating properties of the distribution of prime numbers. But that doesn't tell you why it's so great; books about prime numbers are a dime a dozen.

First of all, Watkins (with the help of the illustrations, which I'll get to shortly) manages to explain everything extremely clearly, beginning from first principles—and I really mean first principles; he begins with the definition of the natural numbers and goes from there. The only thing that could possibly stand between elementary school students and an appreciation of this book is their reading ability and attention span, NOT their mathematical abilities. But—and here is the truly astounding thing—I, a PhD student who has studied math my whole life, could not put this book down. Not only was I not bored, I learned new things! How is this possible? Partly, it was due to the fresh, creative, insightful way everything is explained, coupled with excellent writing; partly, it was due to the subject, which starts conventionally enough but soon wanders into fascinating territory unfamiliar to many mathematicians (including this one). A book like this, accessible to young children and engaging to adults, is a rare and wonderful accomplishment indeed!

Oh yes, and the illustrations. The illustrations!"
Brent Yorgey (The Math Less Traveled blog)

"The first two Secrets of Creation books completely blew me away when I discovered them last year. I read through them in matter of days in a state of disbelief that there existed such an accessible and patient (and cartoon based!) explanation of the Riemann Hypothesis and related matters. It is a monumental achievement."
Paul Stepahin (The Exploratorium, San Francisco)
