Great Book For All Interested Western Civilization

I, as an undergraduate student studying culture and civilization, was very impressed by the content of this title. It covers everything from the effect of the Mona Lisa on society to Guernica. It goes into great detail about how art, music, and archetecture has affected society throughout modern times. The quality of the book is unprecidented as the photos and painting prints in it are beautifully presented in a very aesthetically pleasing fashion. This is a must buy for all interested in the affect of the arts on society and culture. As this is the only textbook that I am keeping this year, I completely recommend it for those who may not be taking any subject associated but are just interested in its subject. If I could I would give it 1000 stars.

Government written manual

You will have to wade through this manual and pick out the information you really need to know. This manual was not written for reading, but more as an instructional manual. Have your Carbine available for review and wish that you have a drill instructor standing behind making you read everything because it is easy to miss important information - take your time.

Overall this is a detailed and well written manual, but dry and boring. It will allow you the opportunity to learn everything you need to know to disassemble, clean, reassemble, test and sight in your rifle.

Much of this is based directly off the Army manual, and it includes a lot more pictures that the Army manual, but they have been enlarged so much they become grainy and blurry, so the detail is lost.

Her husband and Nina's father, Peter, was a die-hard Serbian nationalist who was forced to leave his country in the 1950s. Remaining in Canada, he became involved with a terrorist organization bent on overthrowing the Communist Yugoslav government and attacking its supporters in North America. Then in 1977, while his family was still in Yugoslovia, Peter was killed in an accidental explosion while building a bomb.

which proves she is as funny and moving with lighter material

This is a stunning personal history told in the Graphic Novel format that will join the works of Art Spiegelman and Miriam Katin as important personal documents. It is an experience as well as an absorbing read with Bunjevac's unique and affecting art drawing you into her world. I give this book my highest reccomendation and urge the reader to seek out her first book Heartless, which proves she is as funny and moving with lighter material.

Families torn apart by ideology.

I had no idea there was conflict between Serb-Americans, especially not the kind that resulted in bombings in the USA and Canada. Bunjevac’s father came here after WWII, and hated the communists. He got involved with a terror group, bombed Yugoslav embassies and property throughout the country. Bunjevac’s mother came from a family that supported the communists, and the two families hated each other. In a town with a sizeable Serb population, the two groups were often at odds. I never knew.

Aside from the benefits of a history lesson, Bunjevac’s family biography has a very original style of illustration. The drawings are stark black and white, almost with a photorealistic quality. There’s no color, and the author portrays her life with her family as anything but colorful. Life in Yugoslavia was peasantry, and in the USA they lived in rust belt towns that would’ve been gray all over. Fleeing back to Yugoslavia in the 1970’s (the husband’s terror activities were endangering the family) they ended up in a communist utopia, just as gray as a mill town, but with straight modern lines.

My only quarrel with this book is that the comic book style makes it difficult to put things in writing. There’s more I want to know about, like how the family managed in Yugoslavia in the 70’s and 80’s, and how they survived the civil war of the 1990’s. Other than that, the story shifts easily between a primitive country, bleak American mill towns, communist industry, and families split by politics.

A Terrorist in the Family

This is a story of the author's father, a Serbian nationalist. In the scenes of his childhood you see his reaction to loss is small acts of violence. As he gets older, his life has little joy. He drinks and becomes more violent.

While I'd have liked this to be a more personal book, the story is told in reportorial fashion. You learn how the author's family met and married. You learn the history of their region. You see the steps by which her father became a terrorist.

I selected this after having seen these drawings at an art museum in Toronto. While the story is a only sketch, the pictures are not. They are beautifully done.

The book leaves the reader with too many unanswered questions.

About the Author

Kenneth Morgan is Professor of History at Brunel University, London, where he is Deputy Director of the Centre for American, Caribbean and Transatlantic History, and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has published widely in the social and economic history of Britain and her colonies, and in music history. His most recent book, Fritz Reiner, Maestro and Martinet won a 2006 Deems Taylor Prize from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).

An Excellent Primer on Derivatives

"Someone told me that each equation I included in the book would halve the sales," said theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in his landmark book, A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME. "I therefore resolved not to have any equations at all." Such a philosophy seems to have been adopted by 47-year-old Don M. Chance, First Union Professor of Financial Risk Management at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. In his new book, ESSAYS IN DERIVATIVES, Chance prides himself on keeping derivatives simple. It's a "Strunk & White" approach to talking about derivatives, and it works well for him. Originally a collection of 41 easy-to-read essays that first appeared on the web under the heading, "Derivatives Research Unincorporated", the book now includes 70 essays written with only a minimal amount of mathematical equations. All of the essays, says Chance, were re-edited and purged of the informal tone they sometimes took with Internet surfers when it was only an e-book. The idea of writing a derivatives book for those who prefer words to equations (or should I say, those like myself who understand words but not equations) appears to bode well for Chance. The book is a breeze to read, but quite informative. The e-book has also grown in breadth since first appearing on the web. After all, when Chance sometimes failed to add additional essays on a regular basis to the first 20 he originally penned, a spew of phone calls and emails came from a growing cult of derivatives readers on the Internet. "I was beginning to feel like the Ann Landers of derivatives," notes Chance in the preface to his new book. Ann Landers he may be, but the book is better than just some free advice. It is solid information for the right price. And I recommend it.

Don Chance knows his Derivatives!

I am just about done with my MBA, and I have to say this is must-have book for the shelf. I read it cover to cover and now I find myself going to it for quick reference. It is really comprehensive and very thorough. The language is not the usual dense "academese," and I am most thankful to have--set forth in three short essays toward the end of the book--the differences in option pricing theory. This is the best overview on option pricing I've read yet.

About the Author
Karma Yeshe Rabgye is a monk in the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. Originally from England, he now lives in a monastery in northern India. He conducts English, basic Buddhism and meditation classes for monks of all ages. Yeshe has studied with HH the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, HH the Seventeenth Karmapa, and many other prominent Buddhist lamas. He also helped found the Sangye-Menla Patients Charitable Trust, a non-profit organisation and hostel in Chandigarh, in 2008.

The Best Way To Catch A Snake

Lama Karma Yeshe Rabgye presents the ancient teachings of Buddhist traditions and wisdom in a simple and straight forward way. He manages to convey to the reader the most fundamental teachings of Buddhism throughout the book and he shares very easy methods to help the reader learn the importance of being responsible for his/her own thoughts and actions and through such mindfulness training, the reader comes to discover the kindness, compassion and peace that is inherent in all of us.

One does not need to be a Buddhist to benefit from reading this book. It is a source of inspiration and is truly a handbook for living consciously in our modern world.

Clear and concise --- a contemporary introduction to the Buddha's teachings

As a student and practitioner of Buddhism, I welcome Venerable Karma Yeshe Rabgye's clear and concise introduction to the central teachings of the Buddha.

His text covers the Four Seals, the Four Noble Truths, and the Four Preliminary Thoughts and includes appendices on the various schools of Buddhism and a short biography of the life of the Buddha.

Overall,Ven. Karma Yeshe Rabgye presents the subject matter in a way that allows a contemporary reader to relate the teachings to his/her life. At various points, the text invites the reader to think about different aspects of the material by posing questions that are intended for further reflection. Furthermore, Ven. Karma Yeshe Rabgye draws on a broad variety of scriptures that belong to various traditions of Buddhism to illustrate and support the claims he makes. Though he clearly identifies his own perspective (the Karma Kagyu tradition), he embraces the wisdom that is found in the writings of other schools of Buddhism as well. Contemporary references and a sense of humor make "The Best Way to Catch a Snake" pleasant to read and easy to follow.

The only suggestion I have is that, in the next edition, the list of sources that appear in the bibliography section be expanded to include all of the texts that are mentioned in the book. Doing so will allow the reader to follow up on the various canonical writings much more easily.

In summary, "The Best Way to Catch a Snake" is a clear and concise introduction to the principles of Buddhism that is intended for a general reader. I would certainly consider including it in an introductory course on Buddhism that is taught at the college or university level.

Crystal Clear!

What I loved about The Best Way To Catch A Snake is that it stripped back the ritualistic layers of Buddhism and presented its essential insights, of which almost anybody can see the obvious merit. This is not just for the sake of clarity; it is also in response to the lama's accurate observation that many Westerners are confused about what it really means to be a Buddhist. This is something Karma Yeshe Rabgye has special insight into since he was originally from the U.K. before studying in Tibet and India, where he now practices.

Wow!!! I have to say this guide really leaves an impression!

Where most (if not all) guides give you pictures of game related material printed on their pages this publisher actually takes the time to include them out on custom paper types and insert them into the guide for a tactile virus infected reference. Talk about immersion into a Genre!
With digital downloads going the way of the Dinosaur, Gamer's are left wondering why thy are paying just as much if not more for PC download games... Is it the privilege of downloading??
If you miss having a physical piece of the game your playing to read and review offline, this defiantly will fill the void.

I've never seen a publisher go through such detail in a guide and I really hope they continue along this path for future MMO's and expansions.

Sooo Cool!!! Game companion puzzle book comes with what !?! Reveiw from a non-bibliophile

So far really cool. Just know that this book works as a companion to the Tom Clancy game The Division. Playing the game gives you more context into what is happening in the book and vice-versa. At its base the book serves as a survival guide for urban catastrophe, so there are tips on how purify water through distillation, what items to put in a "go" bag and other real life survival techniques. I don't really think that reading the book on its own without playing the game would be beneficial other than having a survival guide with a bunch of scribbles in the margins. However, there's the rub. Having a real life urban survival guide then to also have a compelling survival diary of a woman in post-virus New York makes it a really good read. I am afraid to finish the book, cause at this point I want to find April in the game.
When you start to read you find out that the book was a gag gift from a woman's husband. The woman April Kelleher, now is using this gag gift to help her survive what the book describes as a TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) situation. Along with her day to day diary using the books described survival techniques, you solve embedded puzzles left by the author of the base book. Obviously, you will use this information to further your progress in the video game. If the survival guide and story wasn't enough, the book is made to look and feel weathered and worn. It also comes with seven physical add-ons (ie transit card that serves as a puzzle cipher) to improve immersion into the story and solve puzzles.
Beyond an outside the box approach for game progression, its a nice peripheral the developers made for an owner of their game. If you have the game this is a must buy.

The book is wholly a survival guide as well as another story written in. Pretty awesome and unique to say the least. No DLC if you are only interested in that however there are area's that is talked about that you could find in game by reading this book.

Comforting

To begin this review, let me begin with a disclaimer. I read this book not as a reader of non-fiction, but more as a student reading an historical artifact. My great-grandma died last year and this was one of the books she had saved over the years. I grabbed this first edition copy of Arthur S. Maxwell’s, Your Bible and You, to better understand her unwavering belief in God by reading this from her point of view.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this copy. It helped me to understand my great-grandma’s conservative values and her simplistic life a little more fully. It was fun to put myself in her shoes and read something she may have read to herself or her children. From the inscription in the cover of my copy, I’m assuming one of her boys received this at confirmation in addition to a bible.
I believe this book was intended for those wanting a bit of an introduction to the history and importance of reading and believing The Bible. While this book was written as non-fiction, the reader needs to be aware that were many of the author’s opinions sprinkled throughout. Mr. Maxwell also uses biblical quotes out of context multiple times, which can be dangerous when people don’t read through The Bible themselves to gain further context and form opinions of their own.
That being said, I felt this book provided great comfort and guidance like the gentle hand of a father teaching his children. The author never appeared judgmental or condemning which I feared when I began my reading. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy history, religion, or want a supplement to their Bible reading.
