Worth a read regardless of your academic background

This book is great for anybody who is interested in Game Theory. Even if your background isn't in Economics, this book has enough to give you a very general overview of what Game Theory is, and provides enough practical applications without delving into the technicalities. The book also includes a nice introduction that briefly reviews how Game Theory came to be, and the author cites several recent academic papers that are relevant.

My background is in Economics and Math (at both the undergraduate and graduate levels) and Game Theory was a focus of mine. This book was a nice supplement of the basic concepts and I loved the examples. The author covers the common textbook examples (prisoner's dilemma, hotelling's model, chicken, and credible threats) but offers a lot of variety - some of these examples I had never thought of and found to be very clever.

For those not familiar with the author, he owns a blog and does a weekly "Game Theory Tuesday" post, which I also recommend reading. His post on Game Theory in The Dark Knight is excellent as well.

A practical approach to Game Theory

The ebooks written by Presh Talwalkar are usually about math quizzes and paradoxes: but he is also interested in economics, and therefore it's no surprise that he had collected some of the posts he wrote on his blog, which put together form a introduction to Game Theory.
This field is midway between mathematics and economics (and there's a good bunch of psychology, too, even if people tend to forget this). Trouble is, usually the texts are full of formulas and theoretical ideas, and it is quite difficult to understand how to put in practice what is being learned. Talwalkar prefers to start the other way round: he shows a lot of real-life examples, and explains the theory behind them. In this way, theoretical results like Nash equilibrium and classic items like Prisoners' Dilemma and Escalation Game appear in a natural way. Moreover, Talwalkar explains in detail, with his usual clear style, the framework where the examples are placed and what it would happen if the actors will steer away from the standard behaviour (remember what I wrote about psychology in action?)
I heartily recommend the book to everyone who wants a gentle introduction to Game Theory; but I think that even people used to it will find something new and refreshing.

This book distills the best of Presh's blog in a lucid and approachable manner. I particularly loved how analogies & real-world examples are used to both convey core concepts and helping readers identify and develop "dominant strategies" in day-to-day life. The writing is informal, engaging and keeps the math and theory to a minimum! This works excellently as an introduction and fodder for further reading - the book is interspersed with references for the more serious reader.

A book for healing hearts

I'm not sure what I expected from Stained Glass Hearts by Patsy Clairmont. The subtitle, Seeing Life from a Broken Perspective, certainly seemed to apply to anyone who has lived a life which contained disappointments. So, I kicked back, cracked it open, and dug in. To start with, the author's writing style is very, very chatty. I could almost hear her. I really enjoyed, at the end of every chapter, her suggestions for healing activities: Scripture, music, art, literature, museums and the like.

Clairmont is very personable, seemingly very open about her own struggles with agoraphobia. She seems incessantly cheery, almost to the point of being flip. In fact that became a problem for me; I could not imagine sharing such a book with a suffering friend. I almost put it down. But somewhere around the middle, in a chapter appropriately entitled "Stained Glass Prayer," the author truly let the reading have a glimpse of her broken heart. I began to get a real sense of the caming that holds her broken heart together: " . . . when we lose our joy, the Spirit replaces it with endurance, that indestructible internal insistence to keep on keeping on." And so, finally, I saw how the Almighty pieced together her broken heart through prayer, reading, poetry, nature, and grace. That is what I needed to hear.

Would I share this book with a broken-hearted friend? Probably not. But I would certainly share it with one whose heart is healing.

Making Something Beautiful from the Pieces - "Stained Glass Hearts" by Patsy Clairmont

I have loved Patsy Clairmont ever since my first Women of Faith Conference more than a decade ago. This tiny older lady captivated her audience while holding a tangle of rubber bands. Her dry, witty, yet compassionate delivery carries over onto every page of "Stained Glass Hearts" and I must say that Patsy's prose just gets better with age!

Unlike most books that can be construed as a Bible study, this book is more of a study in beauty - the kind that comes in a variety of forms. Each chapter ends with suggestions of music, art (and website links to view them) and poetry as well as Scripture. Patsy's heartfelt observations about life and the obstacles we all face (loss, grief, pain, etc.) invite the reader into an intimate setting - much like having a long heart-to-heart with a wise older friend. I know I'm picking up stuff I can use when I start turning corners of pages for things I want to remember.

One nugget I marked was, "It's human to wonder and wrestle. Give yourself permission to pray your doubts and despair. God isn't offended by our frailty." Good stuff, right?

"Stained Glass Hearts" is full of nuggets of wisdom, packaged with humor, grace and insight. I'll be passing this around to all my friends...as soon as I'm done reading it a second time!

Stained Glass Hearts

Stained Glass Hearts by Patsy Clairmont is an interesting look at areas of our lives and how we view them. Using this type of artwork as a way to look at situations is really a very unique way of dealing with the things that life throws at us.

This has a powerful message that gives encouragement and inspiration to everyone that needs it. Clairmont does a brilliant job of weaving the stained glass theme into each situation that she goes over in the book, and compares it to relatable stories.

Even though it is a rather deep book, it is an easy read that will have you stop to think about what you're reading. Not all books can do this, but Clairmont does a very good job with this.

Although the music and other things suggested for further listening and reading I probably won't look into further, it is there for others to read or listen to, if they choose.

The overall message that I got from the book is to be more grateful in all things. This is something that most of us don't do enough of, and it is through gratitude that we can all really live a life of joy.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and learning from it. I highly recommend it to everyone who enjoys reading religious books such as this, especially those of "Women of Faith."
