A Text-Book of Astronomy (Illustrated), by George C. Comstock

This book is an illustrated version of the original A Text-Book of Astronomy by George C. Comstock. Teacher and student are alike urged to magnify the observational side of the subject and to strive to obtain in their work the maximum degree of precision of which their apparatus is capable. The instruments required are few and easily obtained. With exception of a watch and a protractor, all of the apparatus needed may be built by any one of fair mechanical talent who will follow the illustrations and descriptions of the text. In order that proper opportunity for observations may be had, the study should be pursued during the milder portion of the year, between April and November in northern latitudes, using clear weather for a direct study of the sky and cloudy days for book work.

A gem, but it ain't for everybody....
By Amazon Customer
This astronomy book was first published in 1901. Why bother with it? Well, there is some amusement value in seeing Giovanni Schiaparelli's Martian canals theories presented with a straight face, but even that is treated as somewhat of a footnote. For a book written three generations before our first planetary probes, the planetary information is surprisingly still relevant, Schiaparelli notwithstanding. So there is that.

The book does not have the latest hi-res computer-filtered Hubble images or many images at all, for that matter. It will not dazzle or delight the reader with color photos of things you'll never actually see yourself. And that is EXACTLY the beauty of this book.

As a text on observational astronomy, it is concerned completely with things a human being can see and discover without the aid of computers, space probes, or robots. This is the last book of the age of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler. This is the book Tycho Brahe might have written, had he been around in 1901. It's all about observing the sky, mostly with the naked eye, and learning how and why things work "up there."

I've not seen other astronomy books that do this without also packing in a bunch of other distracting information. Using charmingly simple DIY tools and experiments, Comstock leads the reader through the process of discovering, and then owning, the workings of the night sky. Frankly, I wish I'd had THIS book when I took a year of astronomy in college in 1990, rather than doing a lot of pointless learning about black holes, pulsars, and similar phenomena that I will never actually see or experience. How much richer to actually own the night sky? To know the order of the constellations and understand the workings of the planets and the Moon?

This books commands you to LIVE some astronomy. Get out there with a pencil and paper and map a constellation -- it shows you how. Calculate sidereal time yourself, out under the stars -- it shows you how. Witness how precession and diurnal motion work -- it even tells you how to build a simple observing tool for this. This is a highly existential and physically engaging book -- you can DO it with your body and mind, not just read about it in an arm chair.

If you are actually interested in learning about the night sky as an observational astronomer, get this book and get busy! If you want some pretty pictures of things you will never actually see for yourself and a slick presentation of the latest findings in astronomy, look elsewhere.

Great text, but where're the illustrations?
By v colangelo
This is an excellent recap of what was taught of astronomy to students at the turn of the 20th Century. The language is very clear and, for additional clarity, is written with proper grammer. The book ( I have the Kindle version) is a very enjoyable read. However, the Kindle version omits, (for unknown reason) all the illustrations and figures that are referenced in the text. This is a painful omission, since illustrations generally help understand the text.

This is for astronomy history buffs only!
By Reed P.
I was acquiring several space science and basic astronomy texts for my Kindle, so I could update my lesson plans as a high school teacher. In my haste to select a few good titles, I stumbled on this one, was dazzled by the modernistic cover and title, and downloaded it without realizing it is a 100 year old text! It ismay be of great historical interest, but I wasn't really aware that I was getting an "archive" volume of something! Be sure you know what you're getting if you are considering this book!
